  • WESTERN CAROLINIAN NEWS April 25,2001 April 17 In District Court in Sylva, charges against a male non-student for possession of marijuana were dropped as the District Attorney elected to proceed against the co-defendant in the case. A male student charged with underage possession of alcohol pled guilty and possession of hallucinogenic mushrooms pled guilty. He was fined $200 and costs, placed on probation for one year, and ordered to attend a drug assessment. A male student charged with underage possession of alcohol pled guilty. Prayer for judgment was continued in the case. Two female students charged with possession of marijuana and underage possession of alcohol pled guilty in District Court. They were place on probation for one year, fined $50 and costs of court and must attend a drug assessment. Two male students charged with underage possession of alcohol pled guilty. Prayer for judgment was continued in the cases. Two male students charged with stealing products from a coin-operated machine in Scott Hall pled guilty. Prayer for judgment was continued on payment of costs. A male student charged with underage possession of alcohol pled guilty and received a fine and court costs. A male student charged with intoxicated and disruptive and underage possession of alcohol pled guilty. He was fined $ 100 and costs and ordered to attend a drug assessment. A male student charged with possession of marijuana and paraphernalia pled guilty and was place on probation for one year on payment of court costs. A male student charged with possession of drug paraphernalia pled guilty. He was placed on probation for one year and fined $100 and costs and must attend a drug assessment. A male student charged with possession of marijuana and paraphernalia pled guilty and was placed on probation for one year, fined $150 and costs, and ordered to attend a drug assessment. At 3:30 p. m., two female students from Scott reported receiving harassing phone calls. At 9:50 p. m., officers referred a female student to University Judicial Affairs for an alcohol violation on the 6th floor of Scott. At 10:00 p. m., officers assisted Jackson County deputies in searching for a runaway juvenile female who had last been seen at Brown Cafeteria. Officers were later notified that the subject had returned home. April 18 A male non-student charged with DWI on 5/21/ 2000 and convicted in District Court had his case remanded to District Court by the local Superior Court. He accepted the sentence of 3 years probation, a $500 fine and costs. A female student pled guilty to DWI and was fined $150 and costs and was ordered to have an interlock device with an alcohol sensor installed on her car. At 7:27 a. m., officers responded to a fire alarm at the Outreach Center caused by system trouble. At 1:17 p. m., a student in Harrill reported that someone was spraying a water gun out the upper floor windows on people walking on the sidewalks below. Officers visited the suspect room and warned the occupant. At 1:30 p. m„ officers investigated a traffic accident which occurred at the Belk Building. A student who reported a computer cable and address book stolen from her room in Harrill on 4/8, stated that the property had been returned and she did not wish to pursue the matter. At 7:06 p. m., a student in Harrill reported that she was receiving harassing phone calls. At 9:43 p. m„ officers banned a male student from Scott and Helder because of a domestic disturbance he caused with his girlfriend. At 10:10 p. m., officers reported a male student using profanity toward them while they were investigating an incident in Scott. The subject had been arrested earlier this month for breaking a mirror. The subject is referred to University Judicial Affairs for disciplinary action. At 1:00 a. m., officers responded to the third floor of Benton on a report of a loud party. Officers asked everyone present to quiet down. At 1:15 a. m., officers responded to a report of a disturbance on the 3rd floor west wing of Leatherwood. The found several beer bottles broken in the area, but no people were found there At 3:00 a. m., officers assisted Jackson County deputies investigating a threatening phone call which came from on campus to an off campus residence. The suspect was identified and charges are pending. At 4:35 a. m., officers responded to a fire alarm in Scott on the 2nd floor. The cause is unknown. At 10:09 p. m., a student reported that his bicycle had been stolen from the Field House lot. At 11:38 p. m„ a student reported that she had received a threatening e-mail from another female student. Officers interviewed the suspect and referred the incident to Judicial Affairs. April 19 At 5:00 p. m., officers assisted the Jackson County Sheriff's Office in attempting to serve warrants for aggravated assault and a domestic violence protective order on a male student in Leatherwood. The subject was located and arrested at 9:30 p. m. At 1:38 a.m., officers responded to a report of a disturbance on the 4th floor of Leatherwood where a student reported that several males were beating on his door and threatening him. At 2:18 a. m„ officers reported a broken light bulb on the 2nd floor, east wing, of Harrill Hall. At 3:08 a. m., officers arrested a male student for DWI, reckless driving, and transporting liquor with the seal broken after seeing his vehicle doing doughnuts in the Outreach Center lot. At 3:42 a. m., students in Leatherwood reported that a male student had broken two fire alarm boxes. Officers questioned the subject who was intoxicated but cooperative and he admitted the offense. The incident is referred to Judicial Affairs. At 4:30 a. m., officers found an intoxicated male student staggering around the Coulter Lot and transported him to his residence in Scott. The subject was underage and the incident is referred to Judicial Affairs. April 29 On 4/20, two female students from Walker admitted the vandalizing the room of another student. The incident is referred to Student Affairs for disciplinary action. On 4/20, officers confirmed that a vehicle reported stolen last week and found shortly thereafter had not been stolen. The owner simply forgot where she had parked the car. At 8:05 a. m. on 4/20, officers responded to a fire alarm at the Old Student Union caused by steam in a mechanical room. At 9:19 a. m. on 4/20, Housekeeping staff in Madison asked officers to keep check on the lobby of the building because beer cans and trash were being left there at night. April 21 At 1:38 a. m., on 4/21, officers responded to a fire alarm at the Old Student Union caused by line trouble. At 6:00 p. m. on 4/21, officers assisted a student who had dropped her keys down an elevator shaft in Scott. At 7:00 p. m. on 4/21, officers responded to an activated call box at the picnic area. There were many people in the area, but the ones who activated the box could not be located. AprilE At 12:47 a. m. on 4/22, officers saw an intoxicated male exited a bus at Reid Gym. The subject, an underage student, was referred to Judicial Affairs for action. At 1:37 a. m. on 4/22, officers assisted WCU EMS with a male who had passed out in a hallway in Leatherwood. The subject was awakened and refused transport to the hospital. At 1:37 a. m. on 4/22, officers responded to a fire alarm at the Old Student Union caused by line trouble. At 2:17 a. m. on 4/22, officers assisted Jackson County deputies with a large party at the Pi Kappa Alpha House. At 7:50 a. m. on 4/22, officers found a gas can outside Leatherwood Hall. At 9:30 a. m. on 4/22, officers found a sorority composite in the lobby of Leatherwood Hall. At 10:50 a. m. on 4/22, officers were told that someone had painted offensive graffiti in front of Stillwell on the sidewalk. The investigation is continuing. At 12:27 p. m. on 4/22, officers assisted the NC highway patrol with a traffic accident at the Episcopal Church where a car in the parking lot had rolled over an embankment. At 1:55 p. m. on 4/22, officers were called to assist a resident of Faculty Apartments who had been locked in the bathroom when a door knob fell off. She had been assisted by neighbors when officers arrived. At 6:05 p. m. on 4/22, officers checked a malfunctioning elevator in the Administration Building and turned it off. April 23 At 1:30 a. m. on 4/23, officers responded to a fire alarm at the Old Student Union caused by line trouble. At 12:24 p. m., officers reported that a sign at Harrill had been broken. At 1:45 p. m„ a student reported that someone had stolen several articles and money from his room on the 8th floor of Harrill Hall on two different occasions. At 3:50 p. m„ a student and Housing staff reported threats over the telephone from a female student. Officers attempted to locate the suspect, but were unsuccessful. The incident will be referred to Judicial Affairs. At 4:00 p. m., a student reported that someone had damaged his car while it was parked in the Walker A lot.
