  • PAGE SIX FRIDAY, FEBRUARY, 1964 Davidson Shells VMI By 129-91 Fired up by a 75-73 loss to West Virginia, Davidson un- leased its fury on VMI by walloping them 129-91 in a Southern Conference game. Fouls by VMI seemed to be the deciding factor in the high score and VMI's loss. Three VMI players went out by this token and among them was Bill Blair who led both teams in scoring with 37 points. Five Davidson players tossed in double figures led by Fred Hetzel with 36 and Dick Snyder with 25. Davidson shot an amazing 55.8% from the floor and out-rebounded VMI 42-30. Hetzel also led in this department as he pulled off 16. Davidson jumped off Ito a quick start at home in Johnston Gym and led in the opening ARE YOU PHYSICALLY FIT? The game then broke wide open into a wild shooting match as VMI almost matched Davidson basket for basket thereafter. The biggest Davidson lead in the first half was at intermission 66-38. VMI caught fire in the second half with Blair connecting for 12 straight points as VMI out- scored the Wildcats 12-2. From then on it was strictly a matter of how high the score would climb. Hetzel broke the 100 mark with a free throw. Coach Lefty Driesel emptied the bench and thusly Ronnie Stone, a Wildcat sub, authored the new scoring record. The Number one ranked team in the Carolina's Conference, the Western Carolina Catamounts, will journey to Lenoir Rhyne Wednesday, February 5, with rejuvenated confidence and hopes for bringing home Bear Meat—and plenty of it! This game should prove to be one of the most exciting games of the season since Lenoir Rhyne knocked High Point down from the number one spot with their 62 to 61 victory over the Panthers last week. Lenoir Rhyne's nip-victory over High Point proved very beneficial to the Catamounts as it boosted their status to Number One, a worthy spot for the hard working Cats. It was not an easy chore for Lenoir Rhyne to overcome the panting Panthers. Without the clutch-shooting of Ed Miatowski the Bears would have been hurting. Miatowski connected for 21 points but he was well backed by his teammates, Neil McGeachy and George Deehan who scored 17 and 14 points re- spectivelv. The Catamounts faced the Bears a month ago, January 5 ..n our own .■our.. J'he Gudgermen had to pull it out of the bag and come from behind in the second half to win. In last month's game it was Miatowsk: stands 6'3" and weighs 180 pounds) who was the big gun for Lenoir Rhyne. By a small amount of deduction it can be seen that this Wednesday's game will be a real thriller to see. Be as careful with THIS As you would be with THIS A high scoring pace was the order of the Gudgermen as the Catamounts ate up the Bulldogs from Atlantic Christian 104-66 in a Carolina's Conference tilt in Wilson, N. C., last Saturday night. In the early stages of the game the Bulldogs stayed close for a short while but could not keep up with the high scoring Sharpshooters Darrell Murray and Danny Tharpe paced the Cat's attack with 29 and 21 point scoring sprees. The -ats were distinctly in the driver's seat at halftime with a 43- 27 lead. The Bulldogs were unable to penetrate the Cats 3-2 zone defense in the final half, while the Catamounts found openings for their high scoring process. The Cats scored 61 points while allowing the Bulldogs only 39 points in the latter period. Reid Gymn will see third ranked Elon seek to regain respect in the Carolinas Conference as the conference leading Cats gun for their 31st consecutive home victory. Elon has lost two recent conference endeavors, first to High Point, Jan. 25, and most recently Elon received i 73-53 trouncing at the hands if conference ranked sixth Catawba, February 1. Elon comes to Cullowhee with a 7-2 conference record. The Cats, on a five game winning streak will come into this game with a 10-2 or 9-3 conference record, depending upon the outcome of Wednesday nights meeting with Lenoir-Rhyne at ory. Elon's other game this 5 will be a non-conference home game with Campbell College. As the "Raleigh News and Tver" puts it, "The feature game of the week pots Elon against Western Carolina, Saturday, at Cullowhee." Elon's recent defeats will cause them to badly want a victory here Saturday, but currently playing in best of form, it seems as if the Cats may be on the way to a conference championship year.
