h Thursday, October 3119% Sports U\t Wz&tttrx Carnltman Goebel Claims Southern Conference Honor Senior Mary Goebel recieves Southern Conference Player-of-the-week award. EMILY BEITEL STAFF WRITER Mary O. Goebel, senior blocker on WCU's volleyball team, has been named Southern Conference/Interstate/ Johnson Lane Volleyball Player of the Week. Goebel, a native of Hendersonville, led the ladies' volleyball team to two wins in three matches last weekend with wins over future league members Wofford and College of Charleston. Goebel notched a rare triple-double against UTC last Friday night with 20 kills, 11 digs, and 10 blocks. She had 16 k lis, seven digs, and five blocks against Wofford on Saturday morning. Against College of Charleston Saturday afternoon, she added 11 kills, 17 digs, and four blocks. She has posted a .300 or better hitting percentage in nine of her last ten matches, seven of which were league contests. Her 100 total blocks so far this season is the third highest single season total in school history, and she currently ranks fourth on WCU's career blocks chart with 254. "Mary O. has really moved her game to a higher level over the past three weeks," said WCU Volleyball Coach Sara Martin. "Her excitement and leadership have been a key to our team's improvement of late." In the latest conference statistical rankings, Goebel is second in blocks per game (1.08) and sixth in hitting percentage (.256). Goebel is the first WCU player to win the league's piayer-of-the- week award since Emily Tillotson earned the honor during the 1994 season. Volleyball Team Collects Two Wins BRIAN CLARK STAFF WRITER The Catamount Volleyball team got their season back on the right track this past week as they collected two victories, along with several individual honors. Despite losing to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga on Friday (14- 16,15-7,5-15,15-9,15-12), the Lady Cats accomplished several milestones. Senior outside hitter Catherine Sawyers became only the sixth player in WCU history to gain 1,000 kills in a career, as she slammed down her 13th kill in last Friday's match against UTC, here in Cullowhee. Sawyers continued her success throughout the weekend, as she collected another 32 kills, bringing her lifetime total to 1,032 kills- fifth best in the Lady Cats history. The Mount Airy, N.C, native is only the second Catamount in this decade to join the 1,000 kill club; the last athlete to do it was Jennifer Ross, in 1993. Also on Friday night, senior middle blocker Mary O. Goebel had a spectacular match, as she posted a rare triple-double. Goebel notched 20 kills, 11 digs, and 10 blocks. Goebel has now moved up to number four on WCU's career blocks list with 254, and currently has 100. blocks this season, which ranks as the third highest season blocks total in school history. The loss to the Mocs was a hard-fought one, as WCU posted a higher hitting percentage, had more kills, and more team blocks. UTC's victory kept them in a tie for first place in the Southern Conference with co- leader Marshall. On Saturday the Cats traveled to Spartanburg, S.C, to face two future Southern Conference schools, Wofford and the College of Charleston. On Saturday morning the Cats cruised to a 15-9,15- 3, 15-7, 15-5 win over Wofford. The Cats were led once again by Goebel and Sawyers. Goebel posted 16 kills, seven digs, five blocks, and a .325 attack percentage. Sawyers, who sat out much of the third game of the match, still collected 12 kills and 11 digs. Freshman Emily Sutton added 10 kills with no errors in 18 attempts for a .556 attack percentage. Sutton also posted 10 digs. With the victory the Cats snapped a three-game losing streak and moved to 7-17 overall while Wofford fell to 4-18 on the season. On Saturday afternoon the Cats were facing their third match in a 24 hour span. The Cats dug deep and were able to overcome fatigue, as they defeated the College of Charleston 15-8, 15-13, 7-15, 18-16. In the victory the Cats moved to 8-17 on the season. The Cougars, who fell to 13- 14 overal, are set to join the Southern Conference in 1998. Double-doubles by seniors Catherine Sawyers and Mary O. Goebel highlighted the Cats' performance. Sawyers had 19 kills and 21 digs, while Goebel posted 11 kills and 17 digs. For her week's performance, Goebel was named the Southern Conference Player of the Week. Once again, "V-BALL" CONTINUED ON PAGE T SC Cross-Country Championship at Western Saturday BRIAN CLARK STAFF WRITER Western Carolina University will host the 1996 Southern Conference Cross- Country Championships this Saturday morning as ten men's teams and eight women's teams vie for the Conference team and individual awards. This is the third time that Cullowhee has played host to the Conference championship meet. The women' s five kilometer (3 .1 mile) race begins at 10 a.m., followed by the men's 8,000 meter (five mile) race at 11 a.m. The races will start at the track area, and the courses will encompass the driving range and the jogging trail. On the men's side, East Tennessee State University is the defending champion. Along with ETSU, three other teams look to contend for the conference title, including the Catamounts. The Cats have never won a Conference title, but have finished as high as second (1993). Head Cross-Country Coach Danny Williamson sees the men's race as wide open between Appalachian State, ETSU, UT-Chattanooga, and his Catamounts. "All four teams have two or three solid runners, and the team that can get great runs out of their fourth and fifth runners will win it," said Williamson. "The head-to-head competition between those four teams have been close all season." On the Southern Conference's list of top eight kilometer times for the season, WCU and UTC each have three runners listed in the top ten, "CHAMPS- CONTINUED ON PAGE 7 Franklin Lanes Bowling with Disco atmosphere Glowing lanes I Blacklights Latest Music I state of the Night Club I Art Sound Lighting I Fog Effects Friday 9:30-Close Saturday 9:30-Close Sunday 7.00-Close Wednesday 3:oo-6-.oo FOR DATES.'
