  • February 21, 2001 SPORTS WESTERN CARCUNIAN 21 Track Tunes Up for Conference Meet By Denise Merritt Staff Writer A select group of the Western Carolina men's and women's track teams traveled to Knoxville, Tennessee Friday for the final tune up before the Southern Conference Championships this weekend in Johnson City, Tennessee. The Tennessee Indoor Classic proved to be the site of numerous personal and seasonal bests for WCU, indicating that the Cats are ready to make another run at the conference title. In the women's pole vault, senior Valerie Jalajas, soared over the competition with a winning height of 12 feet, 2.50 inches. Freshman teammate Michelle Velez finished fourth overall with personal best of 11' 2.50". In the weight throw, freshman Barbara-Lee Palmer had a big personal best of 52-10, which was good enough to claim first place. Palmer also had an all time personal best in the shot put with a heave of 39-9.25. Junior Ashley Herendon produced a personal best in the weight throw with a mark of 48 feet, 2 inches. Sophomores Quileta Dunston and Kineta Williams also achieved personal bests with throws of 47-09.25 and 43- 05.25, respectively. The pair placed seventh and tenth with freshman Kiley Wright close behind in eleventh with a personal best of 39-0.25. Wright also threw an all-time best in the shot with a 39-11.50, which was good for seventh place. In the running events, sophomore Shavon Neely sprinted to seasonal bests in the 55 and the 400-meter dashes. Neely won her heat in the 55, clocking a 7.47. Her 59.82 in the 400 earned her ninth place out of the 27 competitors. On the men's side, Donnie Bryant ran to a fifth place finish and an all- time personal best in the 55-meter hurdles, with a time of 7.77. Teammate Johnny Bomar was close behind with a season best of 7.91. In the 55-meter | SI UDEN1 AFFAIRS SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDSl 2000-01 Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs' Diversity Award This award is given annually, in cooperation with the Chancellor's Task Force on Race Relations, to a student in good academic and disciplinary standing who demonstrates through individual initiative or programming an outstanding commitment to improving diversity at Western Carolina University. Special consideration will be given to those activitie: which promote improved race relations on campus, especially among students. The recipient will receive a $150.00 award. Family Association Scholarship Ihis scholarship is awarded to a student with good academic standing and who is actively involved in organizations at th< university. The WCU Family Association scholarship is a one time, non-renewable award given in the spring semester each year. The selection is based on overall academic achievement, civic and social involvement and leadership potential Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges Since 1934, Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges has furthered the aims of higher education by rewarding and recognizing individual academic excellence, leadership and service on a national level. This award is generally given during the spring semester. Eligibility for this award: Undergraduate juniors and seniors in a degree program with a minimum of 75 semester hours at the end of the Fall 2000 semester and a 3.0 Q PR. Graduate students in a degree program with a 3.0 Q.P.R. The Adelaide Louise Brewer & Albert Dudley Brewer Scholarship This scholarship provides support for entering and continuing students with impaired hearing. Students will be selected on the basis of their general accomplishments and activities in the previous year and their overall social, civic, and academic achievement and potential. The criteria for this scholarship are: (1) Student with hearing impairment (2) Entering or continuing student (3) Other considerations-general accomplishments, activities in previous year, overall social, civic and academic achievement and potential, and (4) Grade requirement of 3.0 GPA. The Dean Plemmons Scholarship The purpose of this scholarship is to provide support for returning students who are active or were past participants in at least three of the following organizations or activities: (1) A campus social organization (fraternity or sorority), (2) A civic or campus service organization, (3) A campus academic organization, (4) A campus organization that promotes WCU (athletic team, cheerleader, band, etc.), and (5) Grade requirement of 3.0 GPA. Henry Lewis Suggs A ward The Henry Lewis Suggs Award has been deemed as the highest and most distinguished award that can be received by an African-American student on the WCU campus. It is awarded annually to the upper class African-American student who excels in the areas of scholarship, leadership, and campus and community service. The winner of the Suggs Award will receive a certificate and cash award, and his or her name will be placed on a plaque in the Office for Student Affairs. The David H. and Gracie Brown Scholarship This scholarship is to provide assistance for students attending WCU. Preference is given to students who are visually unpaired. In the event no visually impaired student qualifies for the award, the Scholarship Committee may select another deserving and otherwise qualified candidate. Students will be selected on academic achievement, overall social and civic achievement and potential. The criteria for this scholarship are: (1) Visually impaired student, (2) Other deserving and qualified student, (3) Academic achievement, overall social and civic contributions and potential, (4) Grade Requirement of 3.0 cumulative GPA. Application deadline for all awards is March 23, 2001 full scholarship details and application materials available in Student Affairs. 460 HFR dash, Bryan Dobbins blazed to a seasonal best, clocking a time of 6.72. In the long jump, sophomore Doug Petway leaped to a season best length of 22-0.75. Karl Willis flew to new heights in the high jump with a personal best of 6 feet, 4.25 inches. Charles Rice ascended above the field with 15-5.75 to post the victorious height in the pole vault competition. Teammate Seajae Hartness Was close behind with a season best vault of 14- 0. The Catamounts will travel to the campus of East Tennessee State and the Memorial Center for the Southern Conference Indoor Championships. WCU will look to defend their women's title from a year ago. Appalachian State took the men's 2000 indoor crown, but judging from recent performances, the Cats look poised to make another run at the title after the second-place from last year.
