  • WESTERN 4 CAROLINIAN NEWS December 6,2000 Theta Xi to Visit Children at Cullowhee Valley By Cory Habicht Staff Writer WCU's chapter of the Theta Xi fraternity will visit two classes at Cullowhee Valley Elementary School on Wednesday. The classes are composed of 19 children aged six to 19, who have special needs. The fraternity will visit the kids for several hours, playing on the playground and playing different games with them, but mostly just showing them attention. Theta Xi, which has been visiting the classes in the same manner for the past eight years, will also bring Christmas gifts and have one of their brothers dressed up as Santa Claus. Many of the children in these classes, which teach life skills, have learning or other disabilities such as autism, cerebral palsy and Down syndrome. Cindy Mathews and Donna West teach the classes. West believes that, more than anything, the attention the children receive is the aspect of the visit they cherish most. "They [Theta Xi] just come down here and play Santa Claus and the kids just eat it up," she said. "The kids are really social and they enjoy interaction with other people; they like that attention. The Theta Xi fraternity has done this for quite a few years and the kids really enjoy it." Mathews echoes West's opinion. In her words, the time the fraternity spends dedicated to the children really makes them feel special. "All the kids really enjoy it," Mathews said. "They enjoy spending time with the guys. They take them out to the playground and play games with them. They really enjoy the social interaction." Brad Miller, president of Theta Xi, will be one of the brothers going to Cullowhee Valley. Having visited the school at this same time last year, Miller feels the experience as a whole is a fulfilling and memorable one, not only for the children but also the students who visit and spend time with the children. "It's actually a lot of fun to go and play with the kids," he said. "It also makes you feel good about yourself for giving back to the community." In addition, Miller believes community service events such as this go a long way to improve the images of fraternities and sororities in the eyes of students, faculty and members of the community. "Projects like this one make not only our fraternity but the whole Greek system look better," he said. "I think it is a great idea for Greek organizations to get involved in the local community and not just the school." MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM THE WCU BOOKSTORE LET US HELP WITH YOUR CHRISTMAS Group to Present 24-Hour Visitation Proposal By Dawn N. Pasley News Editor On Wednesday and Thursday, a group of students will present a proposal for the implementation of 24-hour visitation in WCU's residence halls. Nicole Reato, president of the Resident Student Association, Jonathan Rowe, student body president, and David Whitaker will make the presentation for the pilot program to the board, who will take a final vote on the issue in March 2001. The program, which would initially only be offered in Scott Hall, has four options, according to Rowe. The first and second options offer either full-time or weekend-only round the clock visitation and call for modifications to Unbuilding, such as alarms and a 24-hour sign- in desk. The third option is full-time 24-hour visitation with "minimal" modifications to the building. Under this option, guests would have to be escorted and all entrances to Scott Hall would be locked at all times. The fourth option is similar to the third, but 24-hour visitation would be allowed only on weekends, said Rowe. If any of the options are approved by the Board of Trustees, there will be certain rules that will also go into effect, according to Rowe. Cohabitation, defined as a visit of more than three nights within a seven-day period, will not be permitted. Roommates will also negotiate binding contracts concerning visitation. If the proposal is approved in March, said Rowe, in April when students sign up for their housing in the fall, they will be able to select a room in Scott if they want to have 24-hour visitation. "If a student does not want 24-hour visitation, they just don't sign up for Scott," said Rowe. Rowe also added that sororities have the option to lock their halls in Scott if they do not wish to have 24-hour visitation. Rowe supports the plan, saying that most of the Students approve of the idea and he is determined to achieve it for them. "I represent the 6500 students here at Western and on behalf of them I think it is a great idea." said Rowe. "I know the majority of students want to see some sort of 24-hour visitation go forth. Last week, the Western Carolinian posted a poll on the website asking students their opinion on 24-hour visitation. Of those who responded, 73 percent said they favored 24-hour visitation, 23 percent did not favor it, and 3 percent were undecided. y Mountain Internet 573 West Palmer Street Franklin, NC 28734 828-349-9541 Unlimited Access . $18.95 50 Hours Access $14.95 20 Hours Access ■ $9.95 no busy signals ■nfo@smnet.net ww Opm, up Tt«, Mam tw *!3 COMPUTER SALE Web Hosting Web Site Design Internet Training Business Solutions i tech support www.smnet.net E-Commerce Co-location newsgroup^
