  • December 6,2000 GET A LIFE WESTERN CAROLINIAN 11 Book Review Deck the Bad Guys, Deck The Halls: Suspense for the Holidays By Virginia Culp Staff Writer When Mary Higgins Clark, Grande Dame of suspense fiction and best-selling author, joins forces with her daughter Carol Higgins Clark, who has already proven her own literary strength with four best-sellers of her own, sparks are sure to fly. In their first collaborative novel, Deck the Halls, Carol's creation Reagan Reilly meets Mary's character Alvirah Meehan, with whom she must work to solve the mystery of her father's kidnapping and to get him back alive. Those who are familiar with Mary Higgins Clark's style know that her writing is smooth and stylish, rarely descending into the mire of vulgarity and gratuitous sensationalism that has trapped so many would-be suspense authors, and Deck the Halls is no exception. With unfailing elegance, the layers of the story unfold, the clues are laid before us, and the chase begins. Carol Higgins Clark well merits her success as a writer, and she has obviously learned well from her mother. The Reillys are an unflappable family, even when one of their number has been spirited away to goodness-knows- where only days before Christmas. Reagan, already an established private investigator, aids the police (and the unexpectedly astute Alvirah) with their search, while Nora, her mother, relies on her admittedly vicarious experience as a best-selling mystery writer to predict the kidnappers' next move. As with all good suspense fiction, the plot in Deck the Halls is by no means straightforward. Twists and turns, red herrings and bungled opportunities keep the reader on the edge of her seat. "Reagan glanced around the cozy yet slightly cluttered apartment. The brightly slipcovered couch and matching chair with their rounded arms and thick pillows looked wonderfully comfortable. A corner with shelves had been turned over to the children's videotapes and toys. But it was the sight of the Christmas tree, already in the stand, just waiting to be decorated, that clutched at her heart...." "'Fred is a police officer, Alvirah,' Reagan said, then looked directly at him. 'Rosita and my father were kidnapped sometime this morning....'" "Fred felt as though he had been punched in the stomach. 'Kidnapped?' he said, his tone disbelieving, his face registering shock. He glanced down the hall at the closed bedroom door. 'Those poor kids.'" Bit by bit, the pieces begin to come together. Soon Reagan and Alvirah, along with their friends Jack Reilly (no relation...yet) and Fred Torres, are hot on the trail of the bumbling criminals. But they are also running out of time. Rosita, the hapless limo driver, and Luke Reilly, the crooks' key to wealth, chained in a rotten houseboat at a remote marina, know that if they are not found soon, either the ice in the river or the cruelty of their captors will make rescue a moot point. As the days creep by, they try desperately to think of a way to let their loved ones know where they are. "Let her get what I'm trying to tell her, Luke prayed. 'I can just see myself reading your favorite book to you when you were little.' ... "Dad heard Mom on Imus this morning, [Reagan] thought. They had talked about the children's books Mom had sent to Imus for his son. But why did Dad talk about reading to me as a child? He must have known he only had a few seconds. And he mentioned my favorite book. Which one was it? I can't even remember myself." To say more would be to give away the ending. If you've wondered what to do with yourself over Christmas, or if you simply need a few hours' break from the stress of papers, projects, exams, and so forth this week, Deck the Halls is a quick read, an engrossing story, and a heartwarming beginning to the holiday season.
