  • 18 WESTERN CAROLINIAN SPORTS September 06, 2000 Hook Goes to 'Big Easy,' LA by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor It's a shame that it has to happen...but it is a fact of life for smaller Division I athletic teams. Each and every year they must travel to larger DI schools and participate in glorified scrimmages; being proverbial sacrificial lambs to the larger programs. Since I've been in Cullowhee, the football team has traveled to Duke, Maryland, and most recently to Louisiana State where they've been greeted with a large paycheck and a shift kick to the hind-quarters. Got Hook? CaJan Style The Catamount basketball team has faced off against Maryland, Northwestern, and Clemson amidst a very competitive conference schedule. On one hand, it's a shame that we have to go and play these "money-games;" endure the derogatory remarks from the larger crowds and from opposing media outlets. Yet, all of the above have good sides. Take for instance the most recent trip down to Louisiana. In addition to the $325,000 trip to the bank, the Catamounts were headline material in several newspapers and television broadcasts in the New Orleans/ Baton Rouge areas. Not only media, but the state of Louisiana record football crowd of 87,188 in attendance offered great exposure for the small North Carolina mountain university. It also gave the athletic department, who is intent on changing the attitude and activities surrounding Catamount athletics, a great example to model after. So, as the Catamount football team left the newly-expanded Tiger Stadium last Saturday night, they left an impression; an impression on those in attendance, the record-books, and at the bank. Our visit down to "the Pelican State" wasn't limited to the season-opening game Satur- photo by Daniel Hooker day night. They were also the first opposing team in the "heart of Dixie," which the newly-expanded stadium. started Thursday morning as photo by Daniel Hooker Auburn tailgating experienced en route to Baton Rouge. we drove past Auburn. The orange and blue Tigers of the SEC opened their season that night against Wyoming. However our excursion into town was early that morning. Yet, much to our surprise, thousands of AU fans were already out tailgating for the game—some 10 hours before the kickoff. That was impressive. Our expedition into SEC football was further enhanced that night when we were given an impromptu tour of LSU's athletic facilities by Tiger kicker—and brother of WCU student Kyle Kessler—Kris Kessler. We were able to walk through the LSU locker room, training and weight rooms, as well as given an up-close introduction to Mike the Tiger, LSU's live Bengal tiger mascot. And what's a trip to Louisiana without a stop in the "Big Easy," New Orleans. And what's a trip to New Orleans without sam pling some of the culture and cuisine. Jambalaya and gumbo were the main course, with a side of jazz and zydeco music with Bourbon Street for dessert. But please, disregard the Decadence Festival that was taking place on our first- trip to the French Quarter ... long story. It was here that we were privileged to meet a real NCAA record holder—the third, and eldest Kessler brother—Chad Kessler, who holds the record for punting yards for a season. He averaged 50.3 yards per kick in 1997. Despite the 58-0 romp witnessed Saturday night at the hands of the Tigers, the trip to Louisiana and LSU was one that I truly enjoyed. The hospitality and excitement of LSU fans is something I wish we here at WCU could emulate. So, all-in-all, the paycheck was only a small part of the Louisiana trip — hey, it's all about the memories! Whitmire Stadium: Turf's Down, Bleachers Aren't Construction opener. A new conditions on
