  • 6B WESTERN CAROLINIAN VOLLEYBALL Fall 2000 Sports Lady Catamount Volleyball Heats Up by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor When there were only four players in spring practice camp, things may have looked a little bleak for Western Carolina volleyball. However, poised with a strono returning core, intertwined wan talented freshmen, head coach Michelle Hansen and the Lady Catamount volleyball team are ready to face the challenges of the 2000 season. Last year, the Lady Cats placed a third-place regular season finish, defeating rival East Tennessee State in the rally fifth of the last match of the season to earn the spot. This year, predictions are for the Cats to place fifth. But don't tell that to Hansen and her squad. Western Carolina is led by junior outside hitter Christy Attebery. Attebery's resume reads like a "who's who" of volleyball. Chalk up experiences and a gold medal in Italy this summer, in addition to WCU school record book entries such as third in digs per game (3.73) and a record number of kills per match (40) for Attebery. Last year she led the Southern Conference in kills, ranking thirteenth nationally; all this and she's not played a game as a junior yet. However, the Las Vegas, Nevada native will have to play an even larger role if the Lady Cats are to match last season's success. Another junior, Ashley Minton will be counted on a little bit more in 2000. The middle blocker from Dallas, Texas played in all 117 games in 1999. Minton impressed at times recording 31 digs against Furman. "Attie will be solid as usual and Ashley [Minton] is looking to be more of an offensive threat," said Hansen on two of her returning leaders. Also returning for Western Carolina is setter Bri-Milan Williams. The Jensen Beach, Florida product is a pre-season Southern Conference All-Leaguer. The junior led the Southern Conference in assists with 12.22. Williams is an excellent server as well finishing third in conference ace percentage. Hansen commented that Bri had won the starting job over two other setters and has "had a great preseason." The only sophomore listed on the roster is Cindy Camp. Camp is a de fensive specialist for the Lady Cats who will be a key substitution for Hansen. Last year, she led the team with 32 digs against the College of Charleston. After those four, the remainder of the team is freshmen. Hansen wants all of them to step into critical roles early and often, with three earning starting roles. Pamela Stein brings some much-needed height to the Lady Cat's. The Port Charlotte, Florida native broke her high school's record for single- season kills with 281. Stein was also nominated for the Wendy's high school Heisman. Freshman counterpart Sara Komosinski is a 5' 11 blocker who received the female Athlete of the Year at Mona Shores High School in Muskegon, Michigan. Hansen said, "I'm impressed with the freshman so far, especially Pam Stein. Pam's been very impressive at the net. Sara Komosinski at middle has been putting up a good block, but she also has great potential offensively." Shari Harder broke the single-season assist record at Catholic Memorial high school in Waukesha, Wisconsin. In preseason practice, Hansen commented that she has been "passing nails" and is "picking everything up defensively." Crissi Harrison experienced much success at Fred T. Foard High School. The blocker hails from Hickory, NC and was the MVP of the North Carolina state championship in 1997. Janelle Chockla enters WCU after being named player of the year in 1999 at Apex high school. Carma Deem comes from Marion, NC. The 5'8" outside hitter was all-conference in 1999. Shana Mintz led Andrews high school to the conference championship in 1999. Michelle Gorton was named to the all-state team as an outside hit- Junior Christy Attebery led the team last season in 13 in the nation in the same category. file photo kills per game. She also finished up ranked ter in Port Charlotte, Florida. Hansen has decided on the starting five for her 2000 squad. Returning players Attebery, Minton, and Milan- Williams will start, with freshmen Pam Stein, Sara Komosinski, and Crissi Harrison earning starting berths. The season begins this coming weekend with a tournament at George Mason before jumping into conference play September 5 at East Tennessee State. "It's going to be a tough place to play and it'll be a good test for our freshmen, a real gut-check," said Hansen on playing the Lady Bucs so early in the year. "[ETSU] is going to be gunning for us, but I expect we will rise to the occasion. I'm confident that this team will pull together and the freshmen will be ready."
