  • Fall 2000 Sports WOMEN'S GOLF WESTERN CAROLINIAN 3B Catamount Women's Golf Tees Up for 2000 by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor The Lady Catamount golf team is coming off of what was a record shattering year in WCU women's golf history. However, that team lost three crucial members. And the coach is still optimistic? That's the case with head coach Steve Lott and the Western Carolina women's golf team. "Right now I'm optimistic we're going to have the best season ever even though we lost three starters from last year," Lott said. How can Lott afford such well wishing thoughts? Simple. He's returning six quality golfers, including one that holds the school record for top season stroke average (81.30 over 20 rounds), as well as the second lowest individual round (75). Couple that with a pair of ultra-talented freshmen and it's easy to see why Lott is grinning so big. Lott commented, "Right now, with the scores we're shooting in practice, the team is really excited about what we can do this year. "This team has kind of a special feel to it," explained Lott. "After only a week or so of practice they seem to be bonded together pretty well." The Lady Cats will most likely be led by senior Suzanne Shipley. Last year's 2000 Lady Catamount Golf Team (l-r): Kristin Jarman, Becca Twiner, Brook Stillman. Mary Faulk, Sam Briatico, Jackie Drygas, Suzanne Shipley, and Shelley Glenister. player-of-the-year holds the aforementioned school records and will be turned to by both Lott and her teammates. "She's a grinder," said Lott of Shipley. "She's going to be consistent and we can depend on her for a good round at each tournament." Shipley finished up last season by placing a top 10 finish in the Southern Conference championship, finishing tied for ninth with a three-round total of 234. However, if this past summer is any indication, Shipley's MVP status will be greatly tested by newcomer Rebecca Twiner. Twiner finished the summer a 75.8 stroke average. "Becca Twiner had an unprecedented summer," said Lott. "She played in 11 tournaments and won them all." Lott calls Twiner and her freshman counterpart Kristin Jarman "bona fide golf nuts."He added, "They live and breath golf." Jarman, who hails from Wilmington, had shoulder surgery during the off-season. However, Lott said that she has recovered to about 80% of her game. Yet, collegiate golf isn't totally based on the individual performance. Every team needs five golfers to step up and perform. Lott will turn to a solid core of returning members for production. 2000 Lady Cat Golf Roster Name YR Hometown Sam Briatico JR Cleveland, Tenn. Jackie Drygas SR Lansdale, Pa. "I'm really pleased. We're shooting the best scores we've ever shot," said head coach Steve Lott. Twiner shot a 74 in the first- round, followed by a 76 on the second-18. Shipley overcame a sluggish 81 in the first-round to shoot a tournament-low 72 in the second round, which in eluded six birdies. Shelley Glenister came up one-bird short of Shipley's second-round mark, but matched the tourney-low 72 in the sec ond round. She, too, had a sluggish first-round (82) but rallied to be in third at the halfway mark. Mary Faulk is one of two Lady Cats to post both rounds in the seventies (77 and 79) to be in fourth, with the final cut position, fifth, being occupied by Jackie Drygas at 164. The Judaculla Cup is a in- tra-squad competition for the five spots that will represent WCU at the first tournament this fall. Held at the Waynesville Country Club, the tournament not only guarantees five individuals a slot on the van to Myrtle Beach, but the winner gets a trophy—and a bit of bragging rights. Competition for the Judaculla Cup continues through next week in Waynesville.
