  • 18 WESTERN CAROLINIAN SPORTS February 16,2000 Baseball Swept by Golden Knights Cats Open at Home This Saturday by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor After dropping a cold two-game series to the Volunteers of Tennessee, the Catamounts traveled to Orlando, Florida, where they were handed three losses by the 18th- ranked University of Central Florida Golden Knights. The Cats fell 13-7 on Sunday, 21-0 on Saturday, and 7-2 in Friday's series opener. In Sunday's slug-fest, the Cats again fell behind in the first, 3-0, and trailed 13- 2 before putting a four-spot on the board in the ninth, in the 13-7 loss. Freshman outfield Rod Goldston and junior catcher Matt Price led the Catamount offensive attack, both going two of four and combining for four of WCU's seven runs. Goldston also had an RBI. First-baseman Alan Beck finished one for four, but did knock in three runs while tallying 10 putouts. Catamount starter Wes Overbay was roughed up by the Golden Knights' bats. The sophomore surrendered nine runs on 11 hits in four and two-thirds innings. He also walked three, but struck out a pair. WCU's relievers Seth Foster and Ryan Basner didn't fare too well either, both giving up two earned runs on two hits, with Basner pitching three innings versus Foster's rough one-third. Western Carolina's big ninth inning started with Goldston doubling down the left-field line, then moving to third on sophomore Robert Rudder's single to left. Goldston would score first-off freshman Todd Buchanon's single to center. Alan Beck doubled to center scoring both junior Charles Thomas, Rudder, and Buchanon, ending the WCU scoring. Saturday was a rough day for the Diamond Cats. Central Florida was able to put seven straight men on base in the six-run first inning, followed by a seven-spot in the second en route to a decisive 21-0 victory. Senior centerfielder Charles Thomas said that he was embarrassed following the game where WCU was shutout and held to one-hit. Catamount starter, freshman Jared Burton, got the loss. Yet, five pitchers took the hill in the blowout loss. Western's lone hit came in the top of the sixth inning. Junior infielder Charlie Wands singled to centerfield to give WCU its only hit in the game. The Cats' batters struck out seven times in the loss. Game one of the three-game series on Friday would turn out to be one of the closest. Western Carolina was tied up with UCF in the fourth at two before falling 7-2. Catcher Matt Price finished two for four on the day, and tallied both RBIs.
