Campus Rep Program Seattle, WA 800.487.2434 Ext.4651 campusrep@americanpassage.com by Dawn N. Pasley Asst. News Editor How do you win friends, influence people, and make things happen on a university campus? Eric McGarvey could probably tell you. This business administration/economics double major has played many roles in WCU's Student Government Association, participated in the Golden Ambassadors program, and is currently a member of Phi Sigma Pi honors fraternity and the Honors College. However, his most shining achievements have been through WCU's chapter of Phi Beta Lambda (Future Business Leaders of America), a nationwide organization for students who have an interest in business. McGarvey had been a member of Phi Beta Lambda as a student at Isothermal Community College, and when he trans- fine McGarvey LHP presents .Jupiter Coyote with special guest olivenJs soup Live 3 Crossroads January 2b • T = 30 p-«- For more info call 72Db- ferred to WCU in the fall of 1997, he wished to continue in the organization. Unfortunately, WCU had not had an active chapter for many years. McGarvey was undaunted. "We got seven or eight core members who became officers and we did it ourselves. The students did it all themselves; we didn't have advisor help like you get at a lot of other universities." It was a long, complicated process, but finally the chapter became active again. McGarvey was president for two years and also was elected State Vice President. At the PBL National Conference held in Chicago last July, McGarvey got first place in the nation for Mr. Future Business Executive, a competition which required him to be interviewed several times and to submit a portfolio forjudging. He also campaigned for and was elected to the position of National Southern Region Vice President. "Chicago was probably the highlight of my college career, winning Mr. Future Business Executive and getting the office; also seeing our chapter and the state chapters do so well." McGarvey takes his responsibilities for Phi Beta Lambda and other commitments very seriously, and he says that sometimes people comment on his fierce determination. "It's a big responsibility, but I love helping other people, and that is why I keep doing all of this," he stated. As Eric prepares to graduate from WCU in May, he has few worries for the future. "I'm not worried about finding the perfect job. I'm not worried about what is going to happen to me when I graduate. I have options. But at least I know that when I walk across the stage in May that I have accomplished a lot more than other people, and I have helped other people, whether they knew it or not," he says. tanning salon CJt 293-3125 located across from post office beside cullowhee quick-stop NOW 10 BEDS!
