  • WESTERN 18 CAROLINIAN SPORTS November 17,1999 Cross Country Ends Season at Regionals by Denise Merritt Staff Writer The Catamount cross-country team wrapped up the 1999 season last Saturday on the golf course of Furman. The Cats were among 300 runners toeing the line at the Southeast Regional. 30 schools from conferences such as the ACC, Big East, Ohio Valley, Big South, Colonial, as well as the Southern Conference schools came together with the same goal—run fjjjf enough to qualify for the NCAA. Of the meet, freshman Jessie Norman said, "It's the biggest one I've been in my whole life." The caliber of the competition at this meet can intimidate a young squad such as Western Carolina. The women came back to Cullowhee with a 20th place finish. The experience of senior Jenny Warfford aided her in pacing the team scoring. Her time of 18:54 earned her 63rd place. Keeya McManus, running in her first regional meet, faired well. She placed 84th with a time of 19:12. Shawnta Person was next in the scoring running a 19:55, placing 129th. Five seconds separated the next two Catamounts, Whitney Woods and CJ Smith. They ran 20:34 and 20:39 respectively, placing 157th and 161st. Trish Nervo, of UNC-Chapel Hill, won the race. She blazed the course in 17:03. Because they won the team title, her teammates will join her at Nationals. NC State finished 13 points behind to earn second place. Running longer than accustomed to, the guy's team ended their season with a 21st finish. In preparation for Nationals, the normal 8-kilometer course was stretched to 10-kilometers for the Regionals. Jessie Norman once again led Western to the finish. Over the 10- k course he ran a 33:00, placing 101. Jay Canty and Eric Jeager also had good races. Running 33:48 and 33:55, respectively, earned them 126th and 134th place. The individual winner was Matthew Lane from William and Mary. His time of 29:37 was enough to beat Franklin native Chan Pons. Chan's twin brother Corby was right behind him, helping NC State win the team title in 40 points. William and Mary came in second with 69 points. "I'm proud of the effort everyone put forth," said Williamson. The squads will take this learning experience to track season and build on it to accomplish great things. fc'S Show Wins Tiflc in •fribufc -fo Serve's B-Dqr "Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday to me," you know the rest. Servo is now legal for everything under the sun according to the United States Constitution. Maybe now I can get through more WCW Nitros. But seriously, WCW is getting better, but they still need to get through a whole lot to compete with WWF. They say imitation is the sin- cerest form of flattery, and WCW is taking that logic to the extreme. Monday night displayed a vast similarity with WWF's gimmicks including a Jim Ross clone (complete with Palsy) accompanying Dr. Death Steve Williams' debut in WCW, the names of Creative Control being Patrick and Gerald (the first names of the WWF stooges Pat Paterson and Gerald Brisco), and Asya (buff woman, kinda like Chyna). I know that WCW is trying to poke fun at WWF but this is not the way to win the ratings war. WCW needs some original gimmicks to succeed. These gimmicks don't succeed—they just suck. The World Title Tournament is looking good with the final four being Bret Hart vs. Sting and Chris Benoit vs. Jeff Jerrett. I'm hoping that we see a Hart vs. Benoit match for the title in Toronto (Canadian vs. Canadian in Canada) but I'm thinking it'll be Hart and Jerrett, just to have a heel against a face. Please, for the love of all that is good and decent, stop it with the Filthy Animals! I cannot stand this gimmick. There's nothing more annoying than to hear K- Dog and Little Rey Rey blab on about themselves with the same lines every damn time. At least the Rock has some variety with his catch phrases. It looks like Rey will be going in for some knee surgery shortly. After his little run-in with the Revolution, Rey got hurt. Just the angle he needs to go out and get some repair done to his knee. Injuries are running rampant. Stone Cold is also going for some R & R due to the fact that he reinjured his neck a while back. Some of you may remember when Austin's neck was hurt after a botched piledriver from the late Owen Hart. His relapse is the cause of Austin missing the PPV Sunday night and why the Big Show took his place. I mentioned a while back that WWF has been pushing some of their mid-level talent higher up, like Val Venis and Al Snow, and it looks like they are holding fast to this tactic by giving the Big Show the world title and the Big Boss Man the #1 contender slot. Look for some bouts between these two wrestlers in the days to come. Hopefully, Austin will come back and he and the Rock will have some scuffles as well. 1 received Mick Foley's new book from my girlfriend for my birthday (I love that woman), and will be giving you some feedback on it. Sorry, no quote of the week this week. I just didn't hear anything worthwhile this time. It was a slow week.
