  • Page 14/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/January 17, 1980 WCU wants $10 million center From Page one air-supported roof. Four to six basketball courts in various configurations and handball and racquetball courts are being planned. Trustees Robert L. Edwards of Mars Hill and Avis Phillips of Robbinsville urged consideration of planning a center with more seats, both indicating a belief that within 10 years the projected seating would be too small. Mrs. Phillips said she'd like to see the cost projections on a 9,000 to 10,000-seat center Other 1981-83 construction requests will include funds for a $500,000 warehouse on N.C. 107, Robinson said. Funds to renovate Hoey Auditorium and add backstage and dressing room space will round out the budget, he said. In designating the Mountain Heritage Center theater as "Founders Auditorium," the trustees, in a resolution, said joining the administrative offices and the heritage center in one building symbolizes "the -iiiuiiiii miMiiiii iiiiiiuiti iiiiiiiiin ■iiiiiiinii ■■■•■iiiiiiiiiiiin ii ii jiiiiui mi niiiiiiiiiiiiiiuiiiiiii iiiiiiil: See Ihe World Series in the Caboose Lounge on the Big Screen Steak and Seafood for your dining pleasure... The board said it wanted "to give special recognition to the roles played by the first president and the first trustees in the founding and development" of WCU by naming the auditorium. Robert Lee Madison was the first president and the first board consisted of nine members, later often referred to by Madison as "the noble nine." In "The History of Western Carolina College," written by the late William Ernest Bird, some uncertainty as to when some of the trustees left the board is indicated, as shown below. The nine, with the terms as shown by Bird, are: R. Hamilton Brown, 1889-1913; J. David Coward, secretary, 1889-1923; Thomas A. Cox, 1889-1923; Judge D. D. Davies, 1889-1919, an early (but not the first) chairman; William A. Henson, 1889-?; William N. Norton, 1889-1912, 1918-1925; Lewis J. Smith, the first chairman, 1889-?; Robert L. Watson, 1889-?; and William Wilson, 1889-? The current trustees said "university administrators and trustees for many years have received numerous requests and suggestions from friends, relatives and others that these...founding leaders be accorded fitting and lasting recognition.'' Plans call for portraits and other memorabilia of the original board to be placed in the auditorium in a permanent display. Cullowhee '79 From Page 3 Fall returned to WCU as did the students filled with wonder over the 20th century marvel, the new Mountain Heritage Center and Administration Building, among other names it obtained. Overcrowding in the dorms was prevalent and plans were made for an addition to Hunter Library. Steve Cottrell signed Ronnie Carr and hopes were high for an improved basketball and football team. Parking problems continued to make the editorial page and the students waited anxiously for the arrival of the Little River Band. October saw Drink Till You Drop make the news as participants and non-participants were harrassed by the police. Co-ed housing was uncovered at Scott Dorm and selling drugs seemed to be an easy profitable way of life at WCU. The end of October was highlighted by the Atlanta Rythm Section concert and November was ushered in with Black Week. Arthur Schlesinger Jr. made an appearance here at WCU and death marred campus life as both Dr. Marjorie Baker and Dr. Chan Carpenter died. Times were bad all over the world as the Iranian crisis struck everyone. Students responded by holding an Iranian rally. Also keeping with the topics of the day, Keith Stroup, the founder of NORMAL visited WCU. December finally arrived and students were ready to call it a year. The year had been one of hope and despair, but the Iranian crisis had brought everyone together for a common purpose. It had seemed that at times we had been a nation lost in our own lives without concern for our neighbors, but there was hope. Before students living in Helder went home to their own families, they took it upon themselves to adopt ari elderly couple and give them a Christmas that they could not afford for themselves. Yes, there is hope. Year In review From Page 5 and destruction. The Competency Tests came under sharp criticism'and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill filed suit against the Department of HEW for undue interference by the federal government. On November seventh the US embassy in Iran was taken over by Moslem students in protest of the US allowing the Shah to come to the United States. Though the Shah has left the US and is now in Panama the hostages remain. Since the takeover several US buildings and embassies in Moslem countries have been attacked. The end of the year saw 10,000 Russian troops entering Afghanistan, 16 hopeful candidates gearing up for an all out fight, renewed support for President Carter and the changing of HEW into the Dept. of Human Resources, and that is how we eliminated welfare in 1979. 1. President Carter; 2. Shah of Iran; 3. Jerry Brown; 4. UN Security Council; 5. Ronald Reagan; 6. Ted Kennedy; 7. Ayatollah Khomeini; 8. Hamilton Jordan; 9. Pope John Paul; 10. Margaret Thatcher; 11. John Anderson.
