  • November 17,1999 SPORTS WESTERN CAROLINIAN 17 Nobody Does It Like Hoov by Don Costello Editor-in-Chief Don't let Brad Hoover fool you. The tenacious running back known for running over opposing defenses is one of the most quiet, reticent members of the football squad. Last season, Hoover scored the winning touchdowns against The Citadel, VMI, Elon and Appalachian State, each time wanting to shift the spotlight away from his heroics. "I guess it's my upbringing," Hoover said of his reserved nature. "I played in a system in high school where the coach stressed team unity." Head coach Bill Bleil said of Hoover's humble demeanor, "He's not a rah-rah guy, but he leads by example. He's very unselfish." Hoover's actions speak loud enough on the gridiron. The senior holds nine WCU individual offensive records, all set in the 1998 season that culminated with a 195- yard performance in the 23-6 victory over Appalachian State in the battle for the Old Mountain Jug. In that game, he set the WCU record for carries in a game with 49. "Everything about the Appalachian game was so emotional," said Hoover. "To be carried off the field with the Jug while the field was stormed with students was just crazy." Last weekend, Hoover continued to dominate the Appalachian defense with 174 yards on 25 carries, including the only touchdown for WCU. In all, Hoover has tallied 532 career yards and four touchdowns against WCU's nemesis from Boone. "I can't say enough about Brad Hoover," said ASU head coach Jerry Moore last weekend. "His heart has got to be as big as this field house. He is a tremendous competitor." Moore added, "I'm just glad he's gone and that we've got the other Hoover here (his younger brother Joey)." But the team that fears Hoover the most is VMI. On a warm fall day in 1998 at Lexington, Va., Hoover set four of his records in a 39-17 thumping of the Keydets. Hoov lit up the turf for 251 yards, scored five touchdowns, ran for four TDs, and scored 30 points. The performances against Appalachian State and VMI, combined with a 203-yard rushing performance against Wofford propelled Hoover to 1,663 total yards in 1998, the single-season record previously held by Dan-ell Lipford (1,318 yards in 1977). This season, Hoover passed Otis Mcintosh for second place in career rushing and needs only 22 yards this weekend against The Citadel for another 1,000-yard season. Hoover will still stand behind Lipford all- Phi Beta Delta Honor Society for International Scholars Phi Beta Delta, established in 1987, is the first national honor society dedicated to recognizing scholarly achievements in international education. Brad Hoover needs 22 yards in this weekend's time career rushing unless he gallops for 520 yards. "Through your career you also have certain be one of those guys. In a lot of situations, I think players would be jealous of him, but I don't see that at all because Hoov works so hard and is so mature," said Bleil. "My experience at Western has been good," said Hoover, "and I'm fairly lucky to have had as much success. I've learned photo by Mark Haskett/OPI "Floyd Bowl" for another 1,000-yard season. to handle the ups and downs of life." After his swan song against The Citadel this weekend, Hoover hopes to get a shot to play at the next level, but again he is reserved about his future. "If somebody gives me a shot to pursue football, I will," he said. "Otherwise I'll hopefully be a manufacturer's representative for some big company," the Industrial Distribution major said. Modest to the end, he is. Want to ace the MCAT? Kaplan's got the answers., and the questions! Why do more students choose Kaplan MCAT than all other prep courses combined?
