12 WESTERN CAROLINIAN GET A LIFE November 10,1999 'Bone Collector' Suffers from Calcium Deficiency Mediocre suspense film needs more story, less gory, fewer bony fingers by Alex Esmon Features Editor When a film is advertised as a cross between "Seven" and "The Silence of the Lambs," be very wary. What that usually means is that is has all the bad aspects of both. A handy tip for movie watching: Always stay away from hybrids! "The Bone Collector," the latest film from Australian director Phillip Noyce, is just that—the worst of both films. Denzel Washington, Academy Award winner for "Glory," stars as Lincoln Rhyme, a forensic crime scene specialist. Four years ago Rhyme was victim to a paralyzing back injury while scoping out a crime scene. Now, Rhyme has decided that his life is no longer worth living and he has decided to undergo an assisted suicide. His days are filled with seizures and fits that have steadily worn down his self worth. Angelina Jolie, Emmy winner for "Gia," stars as police woman Amelia Donaghy, a beat cop who has just put in for a tranfer to juvenile crime. Her life is altered photo courtesy Universal Pictures Washington as Lincoln Rhyme though, when she stumbles across a crime scene which involves a hand sticking out of gravel - ring finger skinned to the bone, body buried underneath. The body is that of a well-to-do New York philanthropist, who was termed missing the night before, and whose wife is still no where to be found. The film becomes a race against the clock to discover both the missing woman and the killer—who may be the person responsible for a series of other mysterious homicides around the New York area. For Rhyme, this case becomes his last chance to convince himself that he still has a life worth j^The Bone Collector^ Directed by Phillip Noyce Starring: Denzel Washington Angelina Jolie Luis Guzman Rated R. Bony fingers. Yuck. living. For Donaghy, it becomes a quest to prove that she's a cop worthy of her father's legacy, yet she is scared that she will repeat him—he committed suicide while on the job and she found the body. The film, therefore, has two levels. There is the crime which needs to be solved and there are the personal demons that need to be silenced. The supporting cast in "The Bone Collector" is almost better than the headliners. Luis Guzman, who has had a busy year having just starred in the hit "The Limey" stars as Eddie Guzman, the forensic lab specialist. Alongside him, Ed O'Neill of "Married With Children" fame stars as Det. Paul Sellitto, Rhyme's friend and former co-worker on the force. Of the two headliners, both are equally bland. There is no standout performance. The ending is predictable and the two main characters do nothing to add any spice to the en- S suing hour of boredom one feels once they have figured out who the bad guy is. "The Bone Collector" is a mediocre suspense film that could have been great. With a few more real suspense scenes and one or two fewer gore scenes—I mean really, how many time do I need to see a finger that's been shaved to a bloody stump—the film could have been quite entertaining. As it was, I was contemplating which preview looked the best before "The Bone Collector" was twenty minutes old. "The Bone Collector" is a film that can definitely be skipped. I suggest everyone save their money for "Sleepy Hollow" If you are in the mood for a good suspense film, try "The Night of the Hunter" a Robert Mitchum classic tale of horror and surreality. photo courtesy Universal Pictures Jolie as Amelia Donaghy Bf&Sr HJSfr* {.. ;*&&> High Hampton bin & Country Club Hiring for Fall Season Taking applications for Front Desk, Dining Room, and Housekeeping.
