  • November 10,1999 WESTERN CAROLINIAN 1 Lovely Ladies, Caged Worm, and Agent Double-0 Fore EDINBURGH - The man who immortalized James Bond has decied to tackle a new project involving his favorite pastime. Sean Connery, the dashing Scotsman, has commisioned a script for a film to be shot in Scotland concerning the game of golf. Connery's own film company will produce the film. The film, which is still without a functional title, will feature the Old Course at St. Andrews, Connery's home course. The film is not expected to be a Scottish "Tin Cup." Thank God for small favors. LONDON - In film news, the controversial and over-hyped "Fight Club" has been censored for British screens. Two scenes, depicting defenseless men getting brutalized about the neck and face, have been cut from the film. "In both scenes, there was an indulgance in the excitement of beating a defenceless man's face to a pulp. The British Board of Film Classification required that the cuts be made," said Robin Duval, British Board Director. Disney Pictures will herald in the new year in a very fashionable way. The 1940's animation classic, "Fantasia," complete with updated classical interpretations, will be shown on two eight story IMAX screens. The screens are eight times larger than the conventional film screens. Roy Disney, vice chairman of the Walt Disney Company, said, "My uncle Walt envisioned 'Fantasia' as the ultimate in sight and sound and the IMAX experience clearly lives up to that ambition." In other British bunk-o, Sophia Loren was voted the World's Most Beautiful Woman in a poll sponsered by beauty product maker Beautiko. The actress' picture will be placed in a time capsule for future generations to marvel at. Loren beat out British actress Elizabeth Hurley, who finished second, and American super model Cindy Crawford, who came in third. Julia Roberts finished fourth. Over 3,000 votes were cast in the poll. For what it's worth, there's no way Julia Roberts is the fourth most beautiful woman in the world. And what about Debbie Harry? On the auction scene, a collection of autographs of some of the greatest figures in western culture are to be auctioned off next month by Sotheby's of London. Autographs included in the sale are Beethoven, Lord Byron, Charlotte Bronte, Robert Brown- A Rock Fan Gets the Shaft Leaiherwood's Musings Commentary by Jeff Leatherwood Staff Writer As a features columnist, I am permitted to express my artistic opinion. It gives writers joy to support music and performers to whom they feel readers should be exposed. When hip-hop group Digital Underground was scheduled last week for a telephone interview, I entered into the assignment with the best of intentions. The rap stars, who scored a major dance hit with "Humpty Hump," will be present at Crossroads of Sylva on November 11. Although I personally dislike sequencer-driven rap music, I have no qualms about presenting the people who purvey it. Digital Underground's tour manager, Johnny, had given me the hotel information in good faith, and I was told to contact Money B., the band's leader. I left voice mail and followed up on my call, but Money B. never responded. What I experienced was an unprofessional brush-off by one of Mr. B.'s bandmates. I have conducted several interviews with bands, from reggae's Mystic Vibrations to alternative's Gran Torino, who have never had a charted single or a video on MTV. These people still work hard and endure road life, and their cordiality impressed me in a way that their music could not. I enjoy this kind of relationship with the entertainment business. on the State of Music Digital Underground should never vary from this standard simply because of a modicum of commercial success. Such arrogance toward the press reflects on the public which it serves. The majority of today's music pundits may automatically embrace rap and techno, but there are still devoted rock journalists like myself who remain unconvinced. There are plenty of accessible bands such as the Zydeco Travelers who play danceable music superior to that of Digital Underground. Jazz groups like Con Clave can add some variety to the mix. Finally, I challenge everyone to re-examine the state of popular music today. It is immobile and artificial. Once upon a time, rock and roll was a voice of change. The 50s challenged racial limits by making black R&B accessible to young white audiences. The 60s defied a tyrannical society who waged unjust warfare in Vietnam and the United States. The 70s pioneered rock music to new heights of instrumental prowess, which sustained the 80s for a while. But what have the 90s done? The so- called alternative movement replaced the Glam Metal excess of the previous decade, only to become the same product. Much as I resent Digital Underground's dismissal of the Western Carolinian, at least there's still a human being involved in the equation. Apart from myself, that is. ing, Robert E. Lee, and Abraham Lincoln. The Pencarrow Collection was assembled by Mary Ford, sister of politician Sir William Molesworth from the 1850's onward. The Highlight of the collection is a previously unknown autographed manuscript of a string quartet piece by Beethoven from 1817. The manuscript is expected to fetch in the realm of $350,000. Other special pieces include a signed letter from Charlotte Bronte expressing feminist sentiments and an unrecorded, signed manuscript of poetry verses by Robert Browning. And that's the news from across the pond. MIAMI BEACH, Fla. - The Worm and his by Alex Esmon companion are at it again. Former NBA standout- turned-freak, Dennis Rodman once again is in the news for something other than rebounding. Rodman and his soon-to-be-ex- wife Carmen Electra were arrested late Friday on charges of domestic violence in a Miami hotel room. The couple sustained minor injuries. The two celebrities were led into the Miami-Dade County jail, shackled around 7 am Friday. They were released that afternoon on $2,500 bail. The couple was ordered not to have any contact with one another. Electra filed for divorce in April, but the two have still remained a couple. Rodman, who used to be known for his basketball prowess, has recently only garnered attention for his antics off the court, involving cross-dressing, public disturbance, and bad movies. MONTERREY, MEXICO - Mexican authorities have issued an order for the arrest of pop singer Gloria Trevi. Trevi has been accused of luring underage girls into becoming virtual sex slaves for her manager, Sergio Andrade. Trevi mysteriously dissapeared earlier this year after allegations of her actions began to rise. Trevi is accused by the parents of the victims of having taken advantage of children sent in her care to be guided into the world of show business. Trevi is well known for wearing skimpy outfits and pouring soda on herself on stage. Her annual calender, depicting her in very skimpy outfits, is a yearly best seller. The lawyer for the families said that if the accused were caught, they would be able to go free after posting bail. In Mexico, corruption of a minor isn't a serious crime. NEW YORK - What a day for art! On Monday, impressionist and post- impressionist art was the order of the day at Christie's Auction House. Claude Monet's "Nympheas" sold for an astounding $22.5 million, while Vincent van Gogh's "Le pont deTrinquetaille" sold for over $15 million. A record was set for the sale of an Auguste Rodin sculpture with his "Eve" selling for over $4 million. The total for the sale was $88.2 million. Monet's "Nympheas" was purchased by an unidentified European dealer for well over the original estimate of $17 million. ptew* 631-3333 Mrjin SMuetf, Sylv<j Dining and! intertainmerit Calendar of Events <SH&^nitata!
