  • Thursday, December 5,1968 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN 117 PICTURED ABOVE ABE THfrflOBABLE STARTERS FOR THE 1968-69 CAT* WRIGHT, AND GREG ROBISON. ^ FROM LEFT TO RIGHTS GREG WHITMAN, SAM SAPP, GENE McCONNELL, WOODY WCU Cagers Should Be Tough This Season By GARY TYLER Basketball season is upon us, and Western Carolina should be one of the better cage teams in the Carlinas Conference if size and talent tell the story. Back to add his talents is big Greg Wittman, the new captain, who is now seeing action at forward. The 6'8" native of Rockingham is an excellent shooter and a charging re- bounder. Greg averaged 14.8 points per game last season and hauled down a total of 446 rebounds. Forward Gene McConnell from Cullowhee will be back with his jump shots from the corner. Standing at 6'4", McConnell is no little threat in the rebound department either. Gene has worked hard on his speed and quickness and should be a conference standout, Greg Robison, a 6'6" transfer student from Young-Harris Junior College, will see action at center. Nicknamed "The Ape," the Ohio native should shoot in double figures and skill under the boards. Pickpocket hands and great outside shooting are the trademarks of returning guard Sam Sapp, a native of Metter, Ga. Sapp is extra tough on defense, and is out to improve his Logan- handicapped 12 point average from last season. Woody Wright, a 6'2" freshman from Hamlet, N. C, is another guard who should see much action. Wright is a great shooter and has some of the finest moves since Gypsy Rose Lee. Mai Brown, a "big" man at 5'10", is the floor general of the Cats. Brown, a Shelby native, is one of the first three guards, featuring fine defense and cool moves. Sophomore Paul Litz should see much action at forward this season for the Cats. The Pittsburg native should be important — a possible key to a winning season. Basketball Brochures Then there's 6'10" Henry Brinkmanr a frosh center from Ankeny, Iowa. Brinkman could figure into a winning season also. Greg Kinman, a 6'9" frosh center from Kentucky, and Herman Seawell, a 6'3" junior guard from Rockingham, will also see some action. Both are good shots and real hustlers. A new basketball brochure, featuring a season outlook, pictures and profiles of players, and other valuable information, is now available to Western Carolina students. The new 36-page booklet may be purchased at the University a nominal well worth Center Store for 25 cents and are the price. The "first ever" of its type and scope, the brochure also features school records, coach profiles, and freshman team member facts and figures. AVON ITS ALL ON SALE!! Everything—in AVON of course! Colognes, bath powder, eye makeups, lipsticks, and — Special goodies for the stocking and tree. Unless you're rich, you can't miss with AVON- at the VARSITY SHOP. Open each day from 2:00 til 5:30. THE BROTHERS OF THETA XI FRATERNITY YOU EXTEND TO AND YOURS SEASON'S GREETINGS AT CHRISTMAS Also around are freshmen stand-outs Jimmy Dean, Mike Haskell, and Rod Snyder, plus transfer Steve Taylor. A 20-9 season will surely be hard to follow, especially without Henry Logan, but Coach Jim Gudger has more talent this season than he had in '63 when the Cats were second in Kansas City. Are you fans ready for another K.C. trip? SANTA'S LITTLE HELPER Santa will be here, snow or not Santa's helper, Leigh Ann Gray, is checking out the old wagon, so if there's no snow Santa will still be able to get out to deliver all of his goodies on Christinas Eve.
