October 6,1999 SPORTS Carolinian 17 An Answer too Simple for Bardo Now it's time for a short quiz (Beware: It may be more difficult than anything you'll see in a general education class). Question #1: Can you name the head basketball or head football coach at one of the following schools? A. UNC Chapel Hill B. Duke University C. Indiana University D. University of Kentucky E. Florida State University Question #2: Can you name the Chancellor or President of one of those five schools? ... Okay, time's up. If you've watched any edition of SportsCenter in your life, you can probably answer #1. If you work on the fifth floor of HFR, you probably answered #2 correctly, but were lost on #1. It is no secret that a school's athletic program provides for almost the entire portion of a school's identity. That's a realization that upper level university administrators spend their entire life trying to overcome. We have that problem at WCU. Chancellor Bardo has told some classes that it is "not necessary" for WCU to have successful athletic programs to be nationally recognized. Well, our self-esteemed Chancellor must not have cable TV in his hilltop mansion. In the last three weeks, Western Carolina University has been mentioned at least five times on national television stations. Ironically, none of those references pertained to anything regarding academics or university initiatives. All five references were about the football team. It must puzzle the e-Chancellor considerably when football gets more recognition than any computer requirement or any visit from Mr. Erectile Dysfunction. Now, after four years, it seems that Bardo is starting to read the writing on the wall. He has appointed a task force to study how WCU can become more competitive in the Southern Conference, as well as other pertinent issues. Lots of money is being spent on this project. Included with this task force is a $36,000- a-month consultant hired to visit campus three times a month and provide summaries and suggestions on the athletic program. Bardo is using the $36,000-a-month consultant and the task force as a means toward firing the athletic director. It's the oldest trick in the political handbook. Appoint a committee or task force, hire a consultant, and offer them incentives to spin the results in your favor. Negative results from this study give Bardo a reason to fill the position with his own lackey. Bardo has done the same thing with nearly every other major position that has become vacant during his tenure. This maneuver has led some departments down the ineptitude superhighway. In all his lofty positions in academia, Bardo has never been at a school with an athletic program the size of WCU—seems that should have been a prerequisite for the chancellor's job. Bardo would argue on the necessity of this task force but the answer is much too simple for him or any task force to comprehend. One word: MONEY. Ask anyone in the athletic department. Ask anyone participating on a team. Ask anyone at another conference school. Ask any sportswriter who has covered the Catamounts. They will all tell you that money is the difference between WCU and the rest of the league. Instead, he appoints a task force to figure it out, which is a waste of money (There's that word again). But the answer is too simplistic for any academic to settle on. Bardo has not been taught to think that logically. There must be some theory for him to base it on. Simply, Bardo does not understand athletics. We knew that all along. Bardo doesn't know the names of key players on certain teams. He single-handedly turned away Lamar Hennon and his $1.1 million investment in the baseball program. He wanted cheerleaders at volleyball games. Bardo waits for everyone else to applaud at a game before he does. Bardo, it's time to disband the task force and open up the university wallet. Oh, by the way, the answers to question #2 are: A) William McCoy (interim); B) Nannerl Keohane; C) Myles Brand; D) Elisabeth Zinser; E) Talbot D'Alemberte. The Cats vs Georgia So.
