6 Carolinian FEATURES October 6,1999 ■ . Carolinian Gastronome Finds Inspiration In The Dillsboro Steak & Seafood House Lavatory by Todd Higginson Staff Writer Dillsboro loves tourists. Dillsboro loves money. It is easy to deduce that Dillsboro loves tourist money. From quaint shops to a central location, Dillsboro munches heartily on the almighty tourist dollar. Food is no exception; especially at this time of year, when everyone comes to see the leaves at death's door. There are a few staple restaurants in Dillsboro that cater to the locals, but this epicure decided to become a sightseer. I paid the Dillsboro Steak & Seafood House a visit. After a short wait, my party was seated at an end table. I quickly picked up on the motif: Upgraded country dining. The decor is fitting for the general atmosphere of Dillsboro Steak and Seafood House 489 Haywood Road Dillsboro, NC (across from the Jarrett House) (828) 586-8934. Dillsboro. Local merchants displayed country prints and frippery along the walls. As befits the season, the establishment was lightly decorated for Halloween. The restaurant is long and narrow, making the diner feel as if he or she was dining on a provincial porch. I would have rated the atmosphere higher, but the horrible Muzac for hearing- impaired seniors was ghastly. Visualize a synthesized string ensemble mixed with hammered dulcimer performing a murder- enticing rendition of "Stand by your man." Visualize slowly jabbing a spoon in your ear canal. The speaker was directly above my head, which added to the pain I received. Promptly, my waitress, "Moe" (don't ask), took orders for my group. She was very friendly, with a nice sense of humor. I applaud Moe for putting up with my shenanigans. Since we only have a handful of restaurants that serve steak in Jackson County, I decided to beef up. I ordered the 12oz. sirloin steak ($9.95) with baked potato and the vegetable of the day, glazed baby carrots. Prices are slightly over my comfort zone, but everybody needs a steak now and \V X-V? Main entree prices broadly range from $7.95 to $14.95. Sandwiches, burgers, and salads are available for less lettuce. As the saying goes, "there is no substitute for hard work." Amen to that, but this is a quotation on an inspirational perseverance poster in the men's restroom. A serene scene of a placid lake promoted perseverance—in the potty room! My food arrived, and was presented well. I was impressed by the steak's proportion, but the side dishes were on the scrawny side. Seven tiny carrots did not improve my vision—I had to squint to even spot them. The baked potato was good, but could have been larger. Plenty of butter and sour cream was offered on the side, which made up for the lack of size. The steak was great: tender, cooked to my order, and very lean. Dillsboro Steak & Seafood hand-cuts their steaks, and will blacken upon request. Even though I received a undersized portion of carrots, they tasted first-rate. They had just enough sweetness and a hint of dill. The roll was not homemade, but good nonetheless. I suggest changing to homemade, or purchasing breads from a local bakery. Desserts were available, but I was too Final Assessment The Good: Decent steaks, atmosphere, and service. Take a date. The Bad: Tammy Wynette's "Stand by your Man": MIDI synthesizers, and hammered dulcimers made this connoisseur irate. Oh joy, we got to hear it twice. The Ugly: My suggestion for a new sign in the little boys' room: "Give fiber a second chance and bite your upper lip!" full to eat more. The apple pie and cobbler are homemade, and the rest are frozen, according to Moe the waitress. I knew it was time to go when I heard "Through the Years" piped in a second time around. Overall, Dillsboro Steak & Seafood is a better than average establishment, but I have a few suggestions for making the restaurant college student friendly. As is the case with most local restaurants, the steakhouse caters to visitors. To entice more students to visit, a student discount may bring in a more diverse clientele. The Muzac needs to be buried. Top 40 music would be inappropriate for the atmosphere, but I do not want to suffer from "MIDI hell" again. www.crossroads-sylvo.com for updates phone 631-3322 Main Street, Sylva Dining and Entertainment Calendar of Events Every ?ue K^aokew/TerinTeHoke" Davis Every Weil Open Nc/aeousflC jdto 3:30pm Ho Every lb College Night ]mm aWm* SSJUUn W/DJWaleed "Coyote' __ J°l,e9elDrequired kM UNSCSKTSd MU£AK^r^d^ove) 9:3oPm m VSMOKY MTN.
