Sports February 17, 1994 Western Carolinian Clemson sweeps Cats Derek Smolik StaffReporter The pitching was strong; the defense was nearly flawless, but the hitting was as cold as the weather. That was the story of the Cats' opening day double-header as the Clemson Tigers swept WCU by scores of3-land4-l. In the nightcap, the Cats jumped out ahead of the Tigers early on an RBI single by Stephen Pritchard that allowed John Connolly to score. But the Cats would only get three more hi ts the rest of the way and could not score again. Clemson, meanwhile, was having problems with WCU starter Derek Cockrell (0-1) until Seth Brizek launched the third pitch of the fifth inning over the left field wall to tie the game at 1-1. Just three innings later the wheels came off completely for the Cats. After retiring the first two batters of the eighth inning Cockrell gave up back- to-back singles. Head coach Keith LeClair checked on his closer, Mike Manning, who was warming up in the bullpen. Manning said that he was not ready, and Cockrell stayed in. Mike Hampton made the Cats pay with a line double to left, scoring both runners and giving the Tigers a two run lead. Manning came in after the single and put out the fire, but the damage had already been done. The Cats got a single in the ninth by Jody Henson but could do no more, leaving the final score at 4-1. Saturday'sopenerwasnotmuch more satisfying for the Cats as the Tigers went on a strikeout spree against WCU. Seventeen Catamounts would go back to the bench without even putting the ball in play. WCU only got two hits in the game- both were singles. Western's only run came on an error by Clemson's shortstop, allowing Tony Home to score. The Tigers came out of the gate fast against WCU's starter Jason Beverlin (0- 1), who later admitted to having first game jitters. Clemson got two runs in the first two innings on three hits, but Beverlin settled down and allowed only three more hits over the next five innings. He also struck out five and in seven innings. "Yeah, I was a little nervous, but I had good control of my pitches," said Beverlin. "I think we were trying too hard to hit the ball," Beverlin said of the Cats' strikeout problems. Lady Cats get first SC win Stephanie Jones Staff Reporter The WCU Lady Catamounts marked their first Southern Conference win of the season in the Ramsey Center Saturday afternoon. The 74-71 victory over the Davidson Wildcats went into overtime. Beth Hall-Mason, WCU guard, knocked the ball away from Davidson center, Kristen Ferrucci, under the Davidson basket with two seconds left. Hall-Mason then hit both baskets on a one-on-one free-throw situation to give Western its first league win since their game against ETSU last year. Hall-Mason finished the game with a career-high 21 -points, and Jennifer Adams also scored in double digits with 12 points. Alicia Brittain had 18 rebounds, a game and career high, despite the fact that she fouled out in the second half of the game. The Cats weren't as lucky last Wednesday when they were defeated by the Lady Blue Devils, 117-44. They were outscored by Duke 60-19 in the second half, which brought them down to a (4-16, 0-7) record before their win against Davidson. The defeat set a record - it was the largest margin of victory any team had ever experienced against Western. The Lady Cats were also defeated 97- 53 by Furman in Greenville, SC, Monday. Western only took the lead once in the game at the 17:42 mark. They ended up trailing by as much as 47 points. The Cats only have five games left with their two remaining home games this weekend. They host ETSU on Saturday afternoon at 4pm. Extra Innings, cont'd from 13 bunt single, andhe hit back-to-back batters who scored two runs. A sacrifice fly by Gary Burnham tied up the score at 4-4. LeClair went to the bullpen one more time, this time for closer Mike Manning. Manning looked to have the Tigers shut down when he coaxed a ground ball out of Dexter McCleon that left runners at first and third with two outs. McCleon tried to catch Manning by surprise by stealing second before Manning even threw his pitch but was caught in a run-down. Unfortunately for the Cats after Manning checked the runner at third he threw towards (second baseman) John Connolly and (shortstop) Stephen Pritchard who nearly collided and the ball went off Pritchard's knee into left field. One run was scored on the play, and the Tigers had the lead at 5-4. Western wouldn't die that easily though. Pinch-hitter J.P. Burwell led off the ninth with a single, and Pritchard, who was 3-5 on the day, followed with one of his own. On the second pitch Head Coach Keith LeClair made a potentially costly gamble. He sent both runners on the pitch, a strategy that seemed to back fire when catcher Andy Monin's throw beat pinch-runner Chad Moore to third. Moore slid around the tag and was in safely. On the next pitch Dan Derosia hit a sacrifice fly to right field and Moore scored, tying up the game at 5-5. From there it was a pitcher's duel with Manning, normally WCU's closer, going 4 2/3 innings in the game, while being matched by the Tigers duo of Jamie Eggleston and Brian Matz. Once again defense was the story. Despite Connolly's two errors in the game, he, Pritchard and first baseman Marc Strieker thwarted the Tigers at almost every turn. Connolly made an incredible scoop on ball going up the middle and turned, throwing in mid-air to gun down the runner. Pritchard made several great stops to start three Western double plays, while Strieker made two perfect scoops to save runs on throws to first. The Cats return to action this weekend as Wright State comes to town for a double-header on Saturday (12pm first pitch) and 1pm start Sunday afternoon. The Cats will also take on the Bulldogs of UNC-Asheville next Wednesday at 3pm in a traditional rivalry.
