  • 12 isporti September 17, 1997P western ■• • arolmian Volleyball Cats Pick Up Win in Mercer Classic Western Carolina defeated Stetson on Sunday afternoon to gain a third-place finish in this weekend's Mercer Classic in Macon, Ga. The Catamounts downed the Hatters, 10-15, 21-19, 15-7, 15-6, to finish 1-2 in the four-team tournament. WCU lost to Mercer and Jacksonville State on Saturday. The Cats are now 2- 7 overall and 1 -0 in the Southern Conference play as they defeated Georgia Southern (14- 16, 15-9, 15-11, 15-8) Friday night in Statesboro, Ga. Sophomore Shannon Sweeney, a transfer outside hitter from Miami-Dade Community College South in Florida, was named to the six-player all-tournament team after totaling 49 kills and 29 digs in WCU's three Mercer Classic matches. She also had a career-best 26 kills in Friday's win over Geor gia Southern. It marked the second straight weekend that she has been named to an all-tournament team. In Sunday's match, Sweeney put away 23 kills, came up with 15 digs, and served up four aces while posting a solid .326 attack percentage. Also in double-figured kills were teammates Keeya McManus with 16, Ramsey Herron with 12, and Elizabeth Smith with 10. Herron added 12 digs and Smith had 11 digs. Sophomore Jessi Fick handed out 53 assists and served three aces. Stetson, which defeated WCU in four games last year, fell to 2-6 with the loss. Western got the tournament started with a 15-11,8-15, 15-7,15-10 loss to eventual tourney champion Mercer on Saturday afternoon, despite a stellar performance by Sweeney. Sweeney totaled 18 kills with only one error in 37 hitting attempts for an outstanding .459 attack percentage. Herron led the Cats with a match-high 23 kills. The Catamounts followed later Saturday afternoon with a 15-13, 15-9, 15-6 loss to Jacksonville State, which went on to finish second in the tournament. Herron led WCU with nine kills, and Sweeney added eight. Smith and Tara Chadwick tied for the team high in digs with nine each. Western Carolina will open its home schedule with a key Southern Conference match against perennial league power Furman this Wednesday night at 7 p.m. The match will occur in WCU's Reid Gymnasium.
