Many events have already taken place, some are in progress, and others are rapidly approaching. Sports such as bowling and tennis are closing down after last week's competitions. Earlier this week, the finals for some of the league tennis tournaments were held. Bowling competition consisted of a average three- game scoring for the final awards. Turnout for this was around 35 participants. Team sports such as softball, which is now taking place, have drawn numerous individuals and teams together for exercise and fun. Divided into several classifications and by gender and the nature of the participating organization, this year's softball program is very competitive. Mike Creason, the director of the Western Carolina University Intramural program, stated, "We have 59 softball teams, both men and women." At the softball skills competition, which consisted of individuals representing the organization teams testing their skills in the game of softball, Creason commented that there were approximately 80 participants present, which he said was a good turnout. "I think that they might be a few over and above what we had last year for these specific events," added Creason. Events such as softball and tennis are a part of a cumulative point system that helps in rating each organizational team for final results. Each team, if they hope to stay competitive, must enter into each event to score points. So, what's to come in WCU Intramurals? Well, a points competition, badminton, begins Monday, September 15 for both men's singles and doubles. Then, on Wednesday, September 17, sign-up for men's flag football and women's floopball begin, and run through Wednesday, October 1. Also, the Intramural Department is scheduling a weekend event called "Anything Goes" that will be held Saturday, September 27. This wild and wacky combination of sporting events will coincide with Mountain Heritage Day. So, catch one of the many events tak- ing place around campus. The tournament was held in Wilmington, N.C. On Friday night, Western battled host UNC-Wilmington in a nail-biter that took almost three hours to complete. UNC-W emerged with a 9-15, 15-8, 16-14, 14-16, 19-17 win for the Seahawks' first victory of the season. At one point in the fifth game, Western held an 8-1 lead. Sophomore transfer Shannon Sweeney led the Catamount attack with 15 kills and tallied 16 digs. Keeya McManus added 10 kills and Ramsey Herron led the team with 21 digs. Western returned to the court Saturday morning for another lengthy five-game match, falling to UNC-Charlotte by a tally of 15-9, 15-12, 8-15, 8-15, 15-10. Sweeney again led in kills with 12 and added 12 digs. Senior Tara Chadwick turned in her best match since having knee surgery during the off-season, with 10 kills and a team-high 13 digs. The Catamounts finished off the weekend with a 15-9, 15-7, 15-8 loss to UNC- Asheville on Saturday afternoon. Sweeney posted 11 kills and no hitting errors for a .458 attack percentage. She and sophomore setter Jessi Fick shared the team high in digs with 10 each. It was UNC-As second 3-0 win over the Catamounts in the early season as the Bulldogs handed WCU its first loss a week earlier in Winston-Salem, N.C. Sweeney, who totaled 38 kills and 38 digs with a solid .281 attack percentage for the weekend, was named to the six-player all-tournament team.
