  • Mountain Heritage Day 1980 Weavers, potters, fiddle-makers, broom-makers a wheelwright, a shake-maker and yes, even a still operator will be among the craftsmen and demonstrators who will be at Western Carolina University's Mountain Heritage Day, Sept. 20. 'It appears we will have by far the largest number of exhibits and demonstrations we've ever had,' said WCU art professor Perry Kelly, coordinator of the craft events for Mountain Heritage Day. 'We are expecting more than 20 demonstrators this year in addition to the large number of persons coming to display craft items,' he said. - Among the area craftmen expected are basket weavers Sally Loinst of Cherokee, Amanda Smoker of Robbinsville and Rosey Bradley of Sylva; sculptor Davy Arch of Cherokee; potter Burlon Craig of Vale; and quilter Willa Mae Pressley of Cullowhee. Joyce Moore of Sylva will display her spinning techniques, Monroe Ledford of Franklin will be fashioning brooms, Hilda Jamison of Cullowhee will demonstrate weaving, and Tania Rollman of Cullowhee will demonstrate her corn-shuck doll craft. Many of, the exhibitors attending this year were invited with the help of a grant through the folk arts program of the National Endowment for the Arts. Blanton Owen, folklorist for the WCU Mountain Heritage Center, has been assisting the Mountain Heritage Day Committee in its endeavors to attract a larger number of traditional craftsmen to the annual event. 'We are really excited about the group of exhibitors and demonstrators we have added,' said Owen. Some of the demonstrators who will be located in the area around the front of Belk Building and at the Mountain Heritage Center include Orville Green, a shake-maker from Whittier; Hayes Lossiah of Cherokee who will demonstrate blow guns; Robert Buchanan of Sylva, a knife craftsman; Vinson Dyer of Henderson- ville, ox yokes;Lee Tippett of Franklin, blacksmithing and wheelwright; Elbert Mathis of Cullowhee,, still operation; and R.O. Wilson of Cullowhee, farm implements. Bill Dillard of Cullowhee will demonstrate gunsmith- ing and Billy Crawford of Cullowhee will be on hand with a team of mules and mule sled. Crawford also will exhibit his tobacco-twisting talent. Fiddle-maker Ernest Hodges of Waynesville and banjo-maker Homer Loinst of Sylva will be on hand. If good cooks can be likened to craftsmen, then there also will be several food crafters on the grounds. Each year local cooks bake a variety of cakes, cookies, fry bread and the outer two thirds of some mouth-watering ham biscuits for sale at the country store and other booths. Apple cider is the drink of the day and providing a fresh supply keeps several foks'1)usy all day on the apple press. The Mountain Heritage Day midway, where most of the craftsmen and booths are located, begins setting up around 8:00 am on Saturday. Most booths are in operation by 10:00 am when the musical entertainment starts. The Mountain Heritage Center will offer several special events including the debut of the 'Hazel Creek: Patterns of Life on an Appalachian Watershed' exhibit and a special collection of traditional quilts. At Belk Building, a 17-foot by 20-foot quilt sewn by members of Franklin's Maco Crafts will be on display. The quilt contains some 115 traditional patterns. Jean Gregory, a WCU graduate, coordinated the quilting project. Where Can I Find A Pair Of Stereo Speakers With A Ten Year Warranty For $150?
