  • 8 I features April 21,1999 inian Renowned Art Designer to Lecture in Belk April 22 by Phoebe Esmon Features Editor Internationally renowned designer Piotr Szyhalski will present a public lecture, "Pass It On! As We Sow, So Shall We Reap," on Wednesday, April 22, at 7:00 p.m. in Belk 104. Szyhalski earned his MFA in drawing from the Academy of Visual Arts in Poznan, Poland, and has lectured on interactive and media-based art and design at major universities in this country and abroad since 1985. Since immigrating to the U.S. from Poland in 1990 to teach at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston Szyhalski has maintained a furious pace: teaching, showing his work internationally in both group and solo exhibitions, performing, winning grants and awards, and publishing. Szyhalski is now working at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. His web-site, The Spleen (www.mcad.edu/ home/faculty/ szyhalsky/Piotr), has won several awards, and has been reviewed for the New York Times Arts section. The Spleen explores Szyhalski's obsession with layers of time and meaning, particularly within the genre of propaganda art. Poetic prose, interspersed with arresting images, function as "thought triggers," pulling the observer through a spiral of information. Matthew Mirapaul of the New York Times wrote that, "Szyhalski's user-controlled creation is deeply involving and richly allusive. It is his most fully realized work to date and one of the most accomplished pieces of art on the Web. [...] In "Ding an sich," Szyhalski challenges the viewer to examine the invisible intersection between artist and audience and to contemplate the role of each in determining an art work's essence. [...] That Szyhalski has managed to bundle together the concepts of aesthetic principle, musical form and an overall body of artistic work through the simple use of the word "canon" should not be surprising. [...] Like Vladimir Nabakov and Tom Stoppard, the Polish-born Szyhalski has an Eastern European's flair for extracting the multiple meanings from a word in his newly adopted tongue. In an earlier work, for example, a benign-looking "submit" button on a reader-response form also carries darker connotations." Szyhalski will present a public lecture on Interactive media as art on Wednesday, April 22, at 7:00 p.m. in Belk 104.
