  • Friday, February 25, 1966 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN PAGE 5 Senators Evaluate The Importance Of Elections Every two weeks at 7:00 p.m. the Student Senate meets. Here in the Senate Chamber of Joyner Building, they thrash out the many problems of the student body in relation to administrative policies. Brenda Teague is a member of the Student Senate. She is the representative from Albright Dormitory. Brenda is a Senior Elementary Education major from Winston-Salem. Among her activities she is a sister of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority, the SNEA, and a member of the May Court. Her Senatorial duties include being a member of the Standards, Course Evaluation, and the Cafeteria Committees. Brenda feels that a big part of fulfilling the Job of Senator lies in the realization of the responsibility. She says, "I feel that the Senate has achieved much this year due to the fine cooperation of both the administration and faculty. The senate in its capacity Is a media between the administration and the stu- Brenda Teague regulations changed for the advantage of the student. It's a- bout time the students at Western Carolina College began to get rights they deserve as college students. "Only through the Senate can the students be represented. We must keep the Senate strong with hard working Senators who can get the Job done." Through the review of these two Senators one can see the importance being stressed on election. In order that the Senate might function more near the ideal, it is important for the student body to elect able representatives. Barry Stegall It takes 6V2 seconds to fasten a seat belt 6j^ seconds could save youi life. Or prevent serious injury. That's all the time it takes to pick up a seat bell ... and fasten it. dents and serving as a senator has helped me realize this. The position of senator requires more time than it probably seems If he or she serves the elected position well. I hope that when election comes that people will consider candidates for this position as seriously as they do the President and Vice- President of the Student Body." Barry Stegall is also a member of this Student Senate. Barry, of Draper, is a sophomore majoring in Business and Psychology. He is a Brother of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity and Treasurer of the College Center Board. In relation to the Senate, he is Chairman of the Special Events Committee. Barry feels, "From my past experiences with the Senate for the first year I find It to be one of the hardest working groups on campus. It is In every way, working for the Student Body of WCC. We, In the Senate, are trying very hard to obtain more privileges for the students. We want to eliminate many problems that confront students, which are unnecessary. "The Senate is limited to only a certain amount of power. We cooperated with the administration in every way possible 'or the advantage of the student. I, myself, would like to see the Senate gain more power (because we represent the students) in getting rules and HEDDENS Barber Shop Sylva, N. C. Bass Dear Editor: That Cullowhee is not the most exciting place to be found is quite evident, but I do not believe it is necessary to start fist fights on the streets to remedy the situation. Are we so far in the sticks that the native people do not realize that there exists a right called "freedom of the press?" Friday, I witnessed a scene that upset me. Because a certain article appeared in our paper — an article that did not name any certain place but could be fitting for any place with a guilty conscience — the author was slapped by an employee and banned from the establishment by the manager's wife. This is supposingly a college, but this action is one that would be likely to be found in a third class high- school. I hope I never see such a show of ignorance again. Karen Schmitz De;ir Editor, I'm writing about an article in last weeks newspaper. The article appeared in "Facets" by Bill Smathers. I should like to comment on the circumstances resulting from this article. Freedom of the press is one of our country's most important freedoms. To preserve this freedom the writers and columnists must be able to speak the truth. Therefore, even though the truth hurts sometimes, it must be told with the hope that it will serve as beneficial and not destructive to the party being criticized. A certain incident happened last week as a result of the columnist's article. He was attacked for speaking out. I realize that this was done (probably) out of a fit of anger, but we must be able to take criticism. Jerry L.
