  • features April 28,1999 inian by Alex Esmon Staff Writer Who would have thought that air traffic controllers could be so much fun? That's right, air traffic controllers! "Pushing Tin," the new film from director Mike Newell of "Donnie Brasco" fame, follows the days and nights of some of the most under-appreciated men and women in the working world: Air Traffic Controllers. Yes, that's right—Air Traffic Controllers—those people who make sure our planes land safely and on-time, working in merciless conditions of incredible stress, where one mistake can mean the end of many lives high above the big green earth; These workers give their hearts and souls to make sure little Billy gets to Grandma's in time for afternoon tea and a quick game of catch with old Uncle Jimbo. "Pushing Tin" follows the lives of the employees of Terminal Radar Approach Control—TRACON for short. These men and women bustle to and fro like ants, with frequent injections of caffeine, to bring down every air craft in the greater New York City area in a safe and timely manner. The best of these workers is Nick Falzone (John Cusack), a slick and sarcastic controller who prowls the boards like nobody's business. Nick, a father of two and semi-devoted husband, is loved by everyone, and is the golden boy of the man- ESPN's The Rick' is Pushing Tin? agement. Nicknamed "The Zone" by his co-workers, Nick is the best there is, hands down. Enter Gunslinger number two... When Russell Bell (Billy Bob Thornton) arrives with his rather buxom and scantily clad wife Mary (Angelica Jolie), there's trouble right around the corner. Russell is different— really different. He's quiet, he doesn't drink with the guys, or even use the standard issue chair at his work station. REALLY SPOOKY, I believe is the correct term. Russell is an immediate threat to Nick, in that he seems to do the work effortlessly and with a minimum of stress. Bell is there to challenge the crown, so to speak. A competition ensues, which changes both men in ways neither could anticipate. The emerging rivalry has drastic implications. What if these two cowboys were to let their own personal games endanger the lives of those individuals high above the ground? Or perhaps what if there were to occur some sort of marital indiscretion with—oh, I don't know—the wife of your competitor? The acting in "Pushing Tin" is a little metallic in places. At other times, the acting is terrific and very enjoyable. The most enjoyable performance, though, was not turned in by any of the marquee names. No, the most enjoyable character was Pete the Controller, played by none other than Mike O'Malley, an actor you might know better as ESPN's "The Rick." That's right everybody, "The Rick" has hit the big time! Anytime a script calls for an overweight, unshaven, donut munchin' air traffic controller, "The Rick" will be there to save the day. I know that I feel safer now knowing that men like "The Rick" are in control of my descent from the Friendly Skies. I think I'll stick to the interstate. "Pushing Tin" refers to a metaphor which controllers use when discussing how they shuffle planes around the big blue yonder. It signifies a detachment from the situation, removing any feeling for what living being may be in those airplanes, Are Exams stressing you out? If you're a big fan of themes such as forgiveness and finding purpose, than "Pushing Tin" is right up your alley. Personally, I enjoyed this film, although I was a little dissatisfied with the way in which the conclusions were reached, but seldom do I find a film with a satisfactory ending. "Pushing Tin" is a good character study of people put under incredible amounts of stress brought about by work as well as personal mistakes.
