  • rcriiman Hennon Awarded Contract thru 2000 Catamounts Get 4 in Early Signing Period Sports Information Less than two weeks after Rodney Hennon announced the signing of four recruits, he was awarded a two- year contract. Hennon, who is preparing for his second season in charge of the baseball Catamounts, received the contract after he led his team to a school-record 45 wins last spring. Hennon, whose team also finished third in '98, had four all-conference selections, including the league's pitcher and player of the year. The contract was approved by the WCU Board of Trustees in its Catamounts Baseball Coach Rodney Hennon quarterly meeting earlier last week. Hennon's baseball program concluded the November early signing period by receiving commitments from four high school recruits. Alan Beck from Hudson, N.C, Kris Cline from Asheville, N.C, Steve Bray from Branford, Conn., and Jonny Adrianoff from Olean, N. Y., all signed the National Letter of Intent and will join the Catamount baseball team for the 2000 season. Beck, an infielder at South Caldwell High, and Cline, an outfielder at AC Reynolds High, were both State Games selections and are entering their senior seasons at their respective schools. Bray is a two-time all-conference selection at Branford High School where he batted .500 with 29 runs batted in and pitched his way to a 5-2 record and 0.76 earned run average as a junior last season on a state championship team. Adrianoff was a first team all-state pick as a junior for Portville (N. Y.) Central High as he batted .609 with four home runs and 35 RBI. The Catamounts set a school record for wins last season with a 45-15 record in Rodney Hennon's first season as a head coach. Since joining the Southern Conference in 1977, WCU has won nine league championships and made nine NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament appearances. Toys for Tots Western Carolina University Athletics has designated this Saturday's (Dec. 12) home men's basketball game as "Toy Night" when the Catamounts host Tennessee Wesleyan College at 7 p.m. Each fan that brings a new toy, in its original packaging, will receive free admission to the game. Toys will be collected by Alpha Xi Delta sorority at each entrace to the Ramsey Center, AH toys will be donated to the Jackson County Christmas Store for distribution to less fortunate families throughout the region. The WCU Department of Athletics sponsors Toy Night on a yearly basis at a designated home men's basketball game prior to the Christmas holidays. Your Survival Guide for Sports During the Break by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor With the semester winding down and the much anticipated Christmas break staring us blankly in the face (or us staring blankly at it, whichever fits the best) we are faced with a great question or challenge— What are we going to do sports related over the break? Well, the Carolinian would like to offer some ideas to help you survive the long break away from Cullowhee. However, if you can't get enough of your Catamount sports, the WCU men's basketball team will play at the College of Charleston on December 28 and then again on January 2 versus B-i the Chattanooga | Moccasins. This1 year's game will aired on Fox SportSouth. For any of the many WCU students from the "Sunshine State," the women's basketball team will play the Florida State Seminoles on December 21. Then, for neighboring Georgians, the Lady Cats will participate in the Georgia Tech Christmas tournament in Atlanta. They will start off the year joining the men's team with an appearance on Fox SportSouth January 2 when the Furman Paladins play in Cullowhee. On the fourth, WCU will travel to Davidson to tangle with the Wildcats. Of course, the NFL is playing. As a matter of a fact, the race to win the di vision or the wild card position in the playoffs is heating up. Will the New York Jets make the playoffs? Will the Miami Dolphins, or any other NFL team, be able to knock off the unbeaten Denver Broncos? Well, during your time at home, you can watch all of them. I got two words for the Miami-Denver game — GO FISH! With \ the mention of football, one also has to remember I the "Q & Q Cafeteria" sponsored smorgasbord of college football bowl games. There are more sponsors of the bowl games than there are players—but that is a topic that is better suited for "Odds and Ends!" The Volunteers of Tennessee, who with the demise of UCLA become the luckiest unbeaten team in college football, with tangle with the elite team of the ACC, the Florida State Seminoles in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl on January got Hook? 4 (see what I'm talking about...sponsors galore!) Once unbeaten and number one Ohio State will play Texas A&Mon January 1 in the Nokia Sugar Bowl and Florida will play Syracuse in the FedEx Orange Bowl on January 2. Rumors that the WCU football team was to play in the "Frosted Flakes Cereal Bowl" are false. However, Appalachian State did accept their bid for the "Tidy Bowl/2000 Flushes Toilet J Bowl." But remember that offensive lineman Dan Best and kicker Ken Hinsley will represent WCU in the Blue- Gray Seniors game in Alabama on Christmas Day. Despite the crazy weather as of late, it is actually winter. So, if you are looking for some winter sports action, turn to the "coolest game on earth," ice hockey. Locally, the UHL Eastern Division leading Asheville Smoke will play the Winston-Salem IceHawks four times over the break—twice at home, December 26 and 30, and on De cember 27 and January 1. They have a total of five home games locally, and two in the Winston-Salem area that you can partake of to feed your sports frenzy. But if minor league hockey, which is just as entertaining as professional hockey with half the price, isn't what you are looking for, then how about the Carolina's hockey team—the Hurricanes? Centrally located in Greensboro, getting to a game isn't that difficult. Plus, there is a large population of students from the Piedmont here at WCU. So go and check out some local hockey! The Canes have six home contests while l students are on break. Included in the home games include the Buffalo Sabres, Wayne Gretzky and the New York Rangers (12-26), and the expan- • sion team, the Nashville Predators (1-2). Carolina (I hate simply calling them that—it sounds too much like that school down near Durham) is currently in first place in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference. Well, thanks to that idiotic lockout in the NBA, that will just about wrap-up the survival guide. The sports staff at the Carolinian hopes everyone has a great Christmas break and that everyone watches A LOT of sports!
