  • Grapplers Finish 4th Winning Season Western Carolina University's wrestling program recorded its fourth consecutive winning season this winter and enough cannot be said of the key role played by David Fried- land. The 6-2, 260 pound heavyweight provided over three and one -half times his share of team points in leading Coach Bob Setzer's 1973 squad to an 8-6 mark with impressive wins over Clemson, The Citadel and North Carolina, The 23-year old junior from Bath, New York has become somewhat of a legend around this Western North Carolina campus. Catamount wrestling fans have found the question of just how quickly Friedland would pin his next opponent to be one of constant interest. As Fri. & Sat. flarch".2,3. HE HAS MORE THAN A DOZEN WAYS TO KILL AND THEY ALL WORK. MECHANIC [PG] United Artists one observer put it, "He just shakes hands, throws the other man to the floor and pins him," An imposing figure both on and off the mat, "Big Dave" blitzed through the season posting a perfect 13-0-0 slate and established several WCU individual records along the way, His 13 victories is a record for most wins in a season and continues a record streak of 18 straight extending back to the 1972 season. The former two- year regional heavyweight wrestling champ in his high school also posted season records this year for the most pins (8) and points (69). Also a track star with the shot put and discus in his prep days, Friedland has concentrated on his wrestling skills since entering WCL' in 1970, As a freshman during the winter of 1971, he posted a 5-2-0 mark with three pins to his credit. The following year, he finished with a 6-2-0 record with five pins. With still another year of collegiate wrestling ahead of him, Friedland's chances of firmly establishing himself as a true Catamount sports great are excellent. Of course, this makes both Coach Setzer. and WCU fans very excited. FROM Page 6 Wilson Scott's three-year career has been likened to a roller coaster—a lot of ups and downs. The leaper from Savannah, Georgia played constantly with bad knees that prevented him from ever reaching his full potential. However, he closed with a bang by averaging 22 points and 13 rebounds in the last ten games of the past season. Glymph Childress, a 6-3 forward, played in only 29 games at WCU after transferring from North Greenville Junior College because of academic difficulties. He made his mark in that short time with some outstanding perforinai ces last season and average 7,6 points and 5,7 rebounds per game. The Catamounts' four other seniors also had their careers hampered by injuries, Clay Ward, after starting several games last year, saw action in 18 games this winter; Tim Swain, a key member of the 1970-71 team 'ha; posted a 25-5 record, missed his entire junior season with a back injury and played in only one game this year ; Wolfe and Campbell, as mentioned earlier, were injured early in the season and sidelined for the majority of the recent campaign. The scheduled returnees for next season are Toomer, 6'6" Bobby Baueom (6.5 points and 4.6 rebounds), forward Mike Stump (5.0 points), 6'8" Bill Fleming, quick guard Dennis Sluder and several freshmen off the jayvee team that posted a 10-2 record.
