Entertainment 6 Western Carolinian/December 9. 1982 Firefox Band Seeks Support by Judy Murphy Firefox is the first rock & roll band ever based in Cashiers, NC. The band consists of lour men and two female vocalists. They have been playing together lor 4 months and hope to go far. The band has performed twice in Cullowhee area and numerous times in Cashiers. They would like to sec live music promoted in this area. The members of the band are CW Stewart - bass guitar and vocals, Jim Yoder - lead guitar and vocals, Nick Bragg - drums, John Warren - lead guitar, Betsy Nickelson and Ruth Reid - vocalists. All members live in Cashiers except Nick Bragg, who currently attends WCl).The group was formed as friends shared musical talents on evenings and weekend. Their goal is not making a profit, but to promote live music in a culturally starved area. Jim Yoder who now owns a construction company in Cashiers, came to North Carolina a year ago to "retire" from the music industry. He spent 12 years on the road, playing all over the U.S.A. with the group Tanglefoot. During this time he cut 3 albums. He likes all types of music but has no real favorites. Lead vocalist, CW Stewart, has been in Jackson County for 8 years. Stewart also spent time on the road, going out west and performing with different bands. He has recorded 3 demo tapes which have been played in parts of New York radio stations. Next year he will be attending The Juilliard School of Music. While he is not playing keyboards or strumming his guitar, Stewart tunes pianos and is an electrician. When relaxing he likes to listen to Japanese blues, rock and blues. Nick Bragg is also a member of the group Phoebe and the Pigeon People. Bragg started out at Western as a music major but disagreed with the teaching techniques and transferred to sociology. He is the last member to join the band and likes to play with different types of bands. Songs played continuously on the radio do not appeal to Bragg; he enjoys Beatles, Genesis, Rush and classical music. John Warren labels himself as a classical musician. He is an ex-banker from Atlanta who now owns a landscaping company in Cashiers. He has spent 9 years in North Carolina. Warren likes to play southern rock, but when he is doing the listcnine the music playing is blues. " The band will play at any type of function. Their introduction to Cullowhee was a wedding. In Cashiers they opened for Mylon Lefevre, Christian Rock and Roller, soon after they formed. The prices for a concert fluctuate but each show offers a variety of music. They try to incorporate oldies, blues, rock, and dance music to please everyone listening. No band member feels there is enough support for musicians or live music in Jackson County. "There are a lot of people who would like to play or listen but as of now, there is no way of getting these people together. On campus there is really no one place to centralize. Bragg feels that with a little organization regular events could be set up where people with common interests could get together, play, exchange ideas, and share talents. All being serious musicians, they feel something should be arranged with each other. Once this is accomplished, the goal of Firefox, to promote live music will be easier to achieve. LMP Notes: Pole Results submitted by Judy Swan It's almost over! The semester is coming to a close and the books are finally being opened. Some seniors are getting really excited about the prospect of being in the "real" world while others of us are waiting to stick out one more semester. But all the hard work is worth it. The structure of LM P has changed too which has enabled us to serve you better. We are getting next semester's schedule of events in order and it looks like it's going to be a good one. This information wil. be a great help to us in the decision-making process of scheduling events. While I'm on the subject of polls, the results of the major concert polls have come in and we have three winners. Hall and Oates, Kinks and Kool and the Gang were the top three bands that were voted on last week by students. Any one of these bands would surely prove to be an excellent show. We are checking into all three of them to see which one could be a possible show here in Cullowhee. Don't lose faith, any one of these bands could come through so maybe the band you voted on will perform here next semester. In the meantime, we would like ,to wish the graduating seniors the best of luck in whatever they set out to do. Good luck on your finals and have a safe Christmas break.
