  • ®Ij£ Hejstmt Carolinian Sports Thursday, September 5 1996 5 Cats Open Season at Liberty BRYAN SHARPE SPORTS EDITOR Once again, it's time for the sound of helmets colliding, pads cracking, and fans cheering. That's right—it's football time once again, and our beloved Catamounts open their 1996 season at I-AA powerhouse Liberty University on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Lynchburg, Va. WCU will field one of its most inexperienced teams ever with 23 of the team's 44—man depth chart consisting of either freshmen or sophomores. The Cats will try to bounce back from a disappointing 3-7 record last year, finishing eighth in the highly competitive Southern Conference. "It is also difficult to realistically assess our strengths at this time because of so many untested, young players, we don't know how a talented freshman or sophomore—and we have a lot of them—is going to respond in a game situation," said Coach Steve Hodgin. Western will have a tough opening game against Liberty University, nationally ranked 14th in the IAApre-season polls. Liberty is coming off a tough 24-20 defeat to WCU's Southern Conference foe East Tennessee State University. "Liberty is still a heck of a football team," commented Hodgin. "Their loss should serve as a wake-up call for them, so our football team must execute on every single play and make minimal mistakes in order for us to win the game." Although the Cats are inexperienced, Hodgin feels that their work ethic will be the key for the team this season. "We can have a good football team, but to be good, this team is going to have to out-execute, out-think, and out-hustle our opponents. We have enough talent to win, but we must rely on our work ethic to win." The Catamounts will go into Saturday's game without one of their biggest offensive threats, tailback Terence Stokes, a second team pre- Intramural Sport Activities Listed INFORMATION COURTESY OF WCU INTRAMURAL OFFICE 1.
