  • ®tje 13l.e0t-ern Carolinian Sports Thursday, August 29,1996 7 Catamounts Gear Up For 1996 Season COURTESY OF SPORTS INFORMATION Despite the loss of another No. 1 tailback for an extended period, Coach Steve Hodgin says Western Carolina University's football team is on schedule following its first scrimmage of the preseason period. Tracy Biggs, who entered last Saturday *mmt\ Jfe night's scrimmage as the Catamounts' starting tailback, suffered a severe sprain of his right foot late in the scrimmage. The freshman from Palm Bay, Florida had a 65-yard touchdown earlier in the evening. He will be sidelined for three to six weeks and is not expected to be ready to play in the Catamounts' season opener on September 7 at Liberty University. The Catamounts' No. 1 tailback coming out of spring practice, rising sophomore Terence Stokes, has been suspended indefinitely from the team pending a scheduled court appearance in Wake County on August 29. "The loss of Tracy is obviously a setback for our team, but injuries are expected in the preseason when you are having a lot of tough practices and we have learned to deal with them," said Hodgin. Two other projected starters - wide receiver Andy Bush (knee and ankle sprain) and defensive end John Scott (fractured hand) - are also sidelined for at least two weeks with injuries F WCU's depth chart now lists redshirt freshman Brad Hoover (Thomasville's Ledford High) as the No. 1 tailback followed by Darius Hooks (Greenville's North Pitt High), another redshirt freshman, and true freshman Rocky Dietz, a product of Swain High. Fullback David Runner, a sophomore letterman, is now the only Catamount running back with collegiate experience. Hodgin says he was "pleased, but not satisfied" with the Catamounts' showing in the ini tial scrimmage. "This team has worked real hard to learn the Xs and Os and that showed Saturday night as we didn't have any major busted plays or blown assignments. Our objective now is to execute the Xs and Os with intensity," he noted. "We didn't have any suprises, positively or negatively, from our personnel and are on schedule. This is a blue collar team with no prima donnas and everyone is working very hard and determined to prove those wrong who picked us to be bottom feeders," stated Hodgin.
