Seriously Mr. Yandle, 1 think we can agree upon the fact that nol many people had heard of El Salvador until this week. Ihe news came as a surprise, as do niosi events lhal happen In Latin America. I Ihink this fact reflects grave consequences for America. Latin America is no longer a U.S. lake, as it was in Ihe days of Ihe Monroe Doctrine. Suddenly, without us even realizing il, countries in our own back yard are coming under increasing pressure from the Soviet Union and (heir Cuban surrogates. £r^d with this In our own backyard, we stand by aa helpless bystanders unable to take stem action because of our national paralysis of will. Americans must realize what role Cuba and the USSR are playing in Latin America. In the absence of any coherent and long range U.S. military and financial PoRMtTOKvf. V/JC WtJflti\C>T Vr>uB. coo>?et?.AT>ort «4RPUGirt committments, these two are taking advantage of THIS ftP-VOD of nAcoiAvjCNlCt^tC. TV.ANV-- VoU. " legitimate moves for self-determination, and turning Ihem Into movements that are sympathetic to the Soviets. Involved in this are growing signs that the Soviets intend lo use their growing military strength with impunity . even in areas once considered the domain of the U.S. Armed Forces. This pressure can only Increase in \cars to come with concessions granted Ihe Soviets in SALT II. Clearly, a more aggressive U.S. presence Is needed in Latin America. If It lakes aggressive efforts to back down Ihe Soviets—so be it. It's hard to argue for appeasement and conciliation In Ihe face of growing Soviet adventurism, especially in our own hemisphere. Watch for Soviet efforts at toppling the weak governments in Central America—II Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala. With America afraid to come oul and defend long time allies, it's only a matter of time. Whatever the outcome, one fact remains certain. The Soviets are posing a grave threat to us In the Carribean, and it remains to be seen if Americans have Ihe resolve to stop them. rermdcUJai km&Vi to re mn Wilkins, even after a two week rest period, your ignorance amazes me. The Soviet Union was not the culprit behind the scenes in El Salvador. The people, as in Nicaragua, were united against a tyrant. Gen. Carlos Romero was an unmerciful dictator much In the same mold as Anastasio Samoza in Nicaragua. Unlike you, my feelings lie with the people of El Salvador and Ihe group that riddled the country of Romero. Yes, they are "left of center" bul then again in your eyes, most people are. Nicaragua has not turned to the Soviet Union except for trade purposes. They have aligned more strongly with the U.S. and in my opinion, so will El Salvador. Agreed, Latin America is not "a U.S. lake" but It is not a U.S. enemy either except with a couple of notable exceptions such as Cuba. America's strength with the Latin American coun tries should not come from showing our military mlgm but from our willingness to help these new governments to survive. Wc should applaud Nicaragua and El Salvador for their bravery and perseverance. Harping about the Monroe Doctrine and what, in effect the Cubans and Soviets are doing to jeopardize it are ridiculous. The Monroe Doctrine is an antiquated document thai needs to be revised. Soviet "presence" will be with us for the rest of our lives. The U.S. must learn how to control their domination and be able to offer the Latin American countries a better deal. A more aggressive U.S. presence is not the answer in Latin America. A better relationship with the political powers is how the Soviet Union has shown their "sympathy" for their new governments. ("mon Wilkins, let's not kill Ym, why not just try to be friends.
