  • 2 Thursday, August 29 1996 News (U_H> Western (Earnltman Western Tailback Charged with Larceny COMPILED BY STAFF When the members of Western's football team takes the field at Liberty in a few weeks for their opening game, one of their star players will not be with them. Terence Stokes, a sophomore at Western and the football team's starting tailback, was arrested in Raleigh on August 7 and charged with felonious possession of stolen goods, larceny of a motor vehicle and breaking into a motor vehicle. As a result, he has been placed on an indefinite suspension from the football team that will at least last until his trial. According to an article in the Asheville Citizen-Times, the trial is scheduled for August 29 in Wake PHOTO COURTESY OF OPI County District Court. Coach Hodgin expressed his concern for Stokes. "It was very shocking to us [coaches and players]," he said. "This was very out of character for him." Hodgin emphasized that he was not turning his back on Stokes but that the matter was "in the court system now." Public Salety Highlights 8/17 A student reported that the windshield on her vehicle was cracked while it was parked outside Helder between 11/16 and 11/17. Officers pursued a vehicle from campus at 1:38 a.m. and located it behind Carolina Village where the driver had abandoned it. Officers impounded the vehicle. The investigation is continuing. 8/19 Officers investigated a traffic accident which occurred in front of Scott on 8/ 16. A parent reported that someone had kicked his vehicle causing approximately $350 in damage while he was helping his son move into Leatherwood on Sunday. The investigation is continuing. 8/20 Officers responded to a blue light box activation at the Baptist Church lot where a student reported that a car was rolling out of a space at 8:15 a.m. A student reported that his wallet had been stolen from his room between 5:25 and 5:30 p.m. in Leatherwood. Officers assisted Physical Plant staff in removing a bat from Helder Hall at 8:50 p.m. Officers responded to a fight in Harrill, the two students were intoxicated and had been fighting, and issued state citations to those students for underage possession of liquor. 8/21 A member of the faculty reported a break-in at the cabin at the picnic area at 2:00 p.m.. No property was found to be missing. Officers discovered five vehicles which had been entered in the Field House lot and stadium lot between 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday and 7:40 p.m. on Thursday. Stereo equipment and fishing gear were stolen from the vehicles. The investigation is continuing. A student reported that her car was struck by a hit & run vehicle while it was parked in the Walker A Lot. Officers assisted a student who thought that she had struck a vehicle in the Walker A lot earlier at 9:43 p.m. These two incidents are not related. Officers responded to a fire alarm in Walker where cigarette smoke activated a detector on the 6th floor at 11:35 p.m. 8/22 A student reported that he witnessed the theft of a case of beer from a vehicle on 8/20. Officers are attempting to identify the victim. Officers participated in a traffic check with the NC Highway Patrol at midnight. WCU officers arrested one male student for DWI, another for DWI and reckless driving, and one male non-student for possession of alcohol underage. The NC SHP arrested three persons for DWI or other traffic offenses. Officers also issued several verbal warnings for traffic and alcohol violations. 8/23 Officers investigated a hit & run accident with property damage which occurred in front of Walker at 10s25 PM. A suspect has been identified and the investigation continues. 8/24 Officers arrested a male student for DWI and reckless driving after the vehicle weaved across the center line on Central Drive at 1:30 a.m. Intoxilyzer results were 0.11%. Officers warned a resident of Geogia about NC law pertaining to transporting liquor in the passenger compartment of a vehicle at 1:00 a.m. A female student reported that she had been assaulted by a male aquaintance after an argument in the Coulter parking lot at 3:15 a.m. The male admitted striking the female. He was banned from campus. The victim elected not to prosecute. A student reported that $7 and two credit cards were stolen from his room in Benton Hall between 7:50 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. 8/25 Officers charged a male student with possession of a weapon (bowie knife) on campus after checking a vehicle for alcohol in front of Walker at 1:50 a.m. Two male non-students who were in the vehicle were charged with underage possession of alcohol. Officers charged a male student with driving while license revoked at 2:25 p.m. Officers found a male who was reported missing from Community Care and returned him to the facility at 8:40 a.m. on 8/25.
