Western is coming off a season that saw the Cats win 42 games and make the school's ninth appearance in the NCAA championship tournament. The season for the Cats will get under way this Friday, February 6, down in Deland, Fla. WCU will take on Stetson University for their first three games. The home opener will be Saturday, February 21, when Wright State comes to Cullowhee for a double-header, followed by another game on Sunday. "We're very excited about getting started," stated Hennon. "But we're going to have our work cut out for us right off the bat." Coach Hennon, 27, has been an assistant coach here for the past three years. He was an academic all-star in- fielder while in school here at Western. Hennon replaces Coach Keith LeClair, who left to pursue a position at East Carolina. With this first year head coach come two new assistant coaches, Mike Tidick and Dan Kyslinger. "Having Coach Tidick and Coach Kyslinger has been a great advantage for both me and the team. We've played together and come up through the system together, so we know what each other and this program is about," added Hennon. Hennon stated that the early season practices have been pretty good, considering the weather and all. "They [the practices] have been real good. I am really pleased with the effort that our kids have shown," commented Hennon. In baseball, it all starts with the pitchers and the pitching staff. Hennon feels that he has an experienced group as eight pitchers return this season—five of which will compete for the top three spots in the rotation. Seniors Mark DiFelice, who tallied a conference leading ten wins last season, and Brian Bain, who is 12-4 over the last two seasons, are expected to step up and "give a great deal of leadership" according to Hennon. Chris Waters, senior, will be the set-up pitcher for junior southpaw Brian Hutchinson to do the closing work. Backing up the pitchers will be a veteran field—one that led the Southern Conference last season in fielding. Six of the eight fielders return. The outfield will be the same, as the three starters return to the field for Western. A trio of seniors will start in each of the three fields: Martin Barrow in center, Matt Stillwell in right and Chuck Koone in left. Three of four infielders return to the lineup this season for the Catamounts. Third baseman Jeremy Bruce, shortstop Chris Moore and second baseman Jeff Sziksai will fill the diamond. All-three of the returning infielders received all-conference honors last season. Dave McKay, who played as the designated hitter and outfield last season, moves into the vacant first-base position. Austin Smithwick, a sophomore from Eastern Randolph High School in Ramseur, N.C, will move into the backup catcher position and starting DH. Completing the defensive lineup, Frankie Ward will start as the catcher. To have a complete team, the offensive needs to be there. Western has a good returning threat with seven .300 hitters returning. Last year's team finished fourth nationally in hitting with a .351 team average. "Offensively, we should be balanced throughout the lineup," commented Coach Hennon. "I think it all starts up top for us." The top of the order that Hennon mentioned includes Martin Barrow. This senior from Greensboro "finds a way on" according to Hennon. He batted .383 and stole 18 bases. Following him in the order is Jeremy Bruce, who led the league with a .401 batting average and hit 14 homeruns. Third in the order is Chris Moore, who had a .370 batting average, 10 homerun, 17 doubles and 65 RBIs last season. Chad Koone stole 22 bases last season, and will look to duplicate that performance. Western Carolina's baseball team will be competing in a tough Southern Conference this season. In the preseason polls, the Catamounts were picked third behind new conference member UNC- Greensboro and The Citadel. A much improved Furman team was behind WCU, and then the rest of the conference. "We've got an experienced team with a great group of senior leaders and they know how to get there, but the road to the top will be tough," commented Hennon. He also thinks that this will be one of the most competitive Southern Conference race. WRGC (680 AM) in Sylva will carry the Catamount action live from Florida starting Friday.
