The WCU women placed 15th while the men ran 16th to finish out the year. It was the highest finish ever for either team in the NCAA Regionals. The Lady Catamounts' 15th place finish was one better than the Southern Conference champion and arch-rival Appalachian State. Western edged the Mountaineers by six position points. The first Western runner to cross the finish line was sophomore Jenny Warfford. She has been a top finisher all year for Danny Williamson's ladies. Warfford, native of Siler City, finished 63rd out of 205 runners, with a time of 19:08 on the 5K course at Furman University. Right on Warfford's heels was junior teammate Erica Thiemann. She finished 66th, with a time of 19:13. Rounding out the women's scoring for Western were freshmen Jessica Kirkland, 111, and Jessa Brown, 158, and junior Anne Gardner at 119. N. C. State won the women's championship with 36 position points. Wake Forest finished second with 96. Western was the highest finishing South- em Conference team. They were better than conference teams such as App State, Davidson, UNC-Greensboro, and Wofford. In the men's competition, paced by senior Collin Webster, who ran his personal-best time of 32:10onthe 10k course, the men finished 16th. Webster finished 52nd. Senior Brian Clark finished 70th at 32:30, followed by Jeremiah Buechner at 97, Bill Baldwin at 103, and rounding out the Cats' scoring was junior Matt Lee in 130th position, with a time of 33:47. N. C. State's men followed the example of the women in winning the championship with 51 points. They were closely followed by William & Mary, who received the automatic bids to the NCAA Finals. Western bested several Southern Conference teams, including Furman, the Citadel, VMI, Davidson and Wofford. The next step for most of the runners will be the indoor track season. That season will begin in early December as the Cats travel to Clemson for their first meet. Summer School 1998!!!
