  • Thursday, September 28,1967 Thursday, September 28,1967 WCU Senior Makes Movie In Florida, Co-stars With Polynesian Girl PageS' (Reprint from the Ft Lauderdale News) By DAVE SJODTN DAVIE - Luke Moberly = Broward's claim to film producing fame - feels he *s produced a sure winner. As president and owner of Empire Studios, Moberly explains it this way. Take a 20 minute short and build it around a scene from the famous Ft Lauderdale beach. Find a theme that's big and current - skindiving. Find a blond, well-tanned skin diver, in this case Rick Wagar, a 1964 graduate of StranahanHigh School, who is lonely and looking for a girl friend. Add the romantic touch of a beautiful Polynesian girl who possesses all the grace and movements of a well-trained dancer and swimmer. Finally, have the two to swim and explore through gorgeous eye opening scenes that include underwater reefs, plants, caves, sharks, octopuses, barracudas- set the film to music. How can you miss? Moberly, who doesn't like to say anything unless "it's a sure thing," says it cant miss. And his enthusiasm shows it. "I got the idea for the film a few weeks ago," said Moberly, "and the possibilities looked so good that the film's already been shot In a week I'll have the music and film editing completed. And it should really go over big." Moberly explained that the short, entitled "In the Skin with Me," fits right in with the popular skin diving, surfing craze that's sweeping the country among the young folk. "Skin diving and surfing have never been bigger and probably never will be bigger." The story is about a boy and girl meeting on the beach and later falling in love, the underwater color scenes - two-thirds of the picture - make it "beautiful, romantic, interesting and educational," Moberly said. The Polynesian girl in the picture is Tutiaiiti, age 22, who was born in Hawaii and now lives in Milwaukee. This is the dark beauty's first use any diving equipment in the film like Rick did, other than a face mask, and she didnt seem to mind the sharks and barracudas swimming around her. She took it all in stride." Moberly spotted Rick life- guarding at the Cooper CitypooL Rick's only problem was that he had dark hair, said Moberly, Freitag. "He's a senior at Western Carolina University where he's majoring in physical education. Along with water activities, he keeps busy playing football for the school." The filming was at the John Pennekamp Underwater State Park in the Florida Keys and the Ft Lauderdale Beach. Moberly said he rented seven cameras for underwater filming, valued at $9,000 apiece. A Reb- ikoff Pegasus underwater submarine vehicle was also used, valued at $24,000. The music, recorded by RCA, was written by Dennise Norwood in an album titled "In the Skin with Me." "I took the music and scored it for the picture," Moberly said. IXiring the two and-one-half years Moberly has operated the Empire Studio, 17 motion pictures have been filmed here. The two latest were "Shanty Tramp" and "Danger, Women in Action." "Shanty Tramp," a Georgia backwoods-type feature, produced by Ken Goda Murray, is now playing in several states. "Danger, Women in Action," a James Bond-type thriller, produced by Alberto Lopez and directed by Rene Cardona Jr., is expected to be released soon. IN FLORIDA KEYS "Rick loves to skin dive," said his mother, Mrs. William FRANCE From page 4 similar to what a hangover tastes like. Even when diluted by equal parts of water, the wine failed to lose very much of its potency. Yet by the end of the month, I actually enjoyed having it with my meals. French Breakfast The next morning I was roused, as promised, by Madame at promptly 7:45. The continental breakfast which she served me was the typical morning meal for the French, tea and rolls. breakfast which she served me was the typical morning meal for the French, tea and rolls. It doesn't seem like too much, and it wasn't because it often left me hungry by the time I had walked to the University. I left for the University with the usual aspirations of revolutionizing the French Civilation with my seemingly endless knowledge of the French language. I was sorely disillusioned before I even got on the campus, though. When I finally finished my mile hike, I went to the registrars office and received the hours for my classes. It was sort of unbelievable, really. I had my regular class each morning from 8:30 until 12:15. In the afternoons I was scheduled for an hour of phonetics and an hour of conversation. I was also required to attend four hours of lecture per week, about French Civilization, and partake in field trips through the city. I saw that I had my time fairly well accounted for, so I resigned myself to that fact Steam Plant Employee Retires After 17 Years Of Service "To do a little bit of nothing, hunt and fish"—these are the plans of 64-year-old Alvin Crawford, who will retire from Western Carolina University's steam plant in November.
