Imaginations run amuck— shadows come to life and monsters and ghouls abound. It is the perfect time for spooky stories and the Diana Wortham Theatre in Asheville has just the thing. On Friday, October 27, and Saturday, October 28, nationally acclaimed storyteller Jon Spelman will be performing two of the most well-known horror stories of all time. His performances will include renditions of Beowulf and Mary Shelley's classic Frankenstein. Spelman has entertained audiences around the world with his award-winning shows. He begins these shows as a straightforward narrator, but gradually becomes the characters he portrays, capturing the passion and drama of the stories he performs. His storytelling ability actually brings the audience into the story with him. His acclaimed shows have become great theatrical events that should not be missed. Spelman will perform Frankenstein both Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. Tickets for the show are $10. He will perform Beowulf'on Friday at 10 a.m. On Saturday at 2 p.m. he will perform a show for elementary students entitled Mostly Monsters. Tickets for Beowulf and Mostly Monsters are $5. All shows are open to the general public. The concert will be at the Asheville Jewish Community Center, 236 Charlotte Street, at 4 p.m. The ensemble is composed of Asheville Symphony musicians Mark Clodfelter, Steven Kirkman, William Vernon, Joseph Mount, David Nicholson and Kenneth Wilmot. They will perform selections from composers such as Sousa, Hoist, Gershwin, and Rogers and Hammcrstein. The Giannini Brass, formed in 1988, is named after Vittorio Giannini, the founder of the North Carolina School of the Arts. In the six seasons that they have been performing, the ensemble has become recognized for their innovative community programs. Their first compact disc will be released in November on Sonari Records. Voet-Essaylst to Xead at WCU Poet and essayist Steven Harvey of Young Harris, < icorgia. will read from his works, including his critically acclaimed book of essays, A Geomett v of Lilies, on Monday October 23 at Western Carolina University. Harvey, professor of English at Young Harris (lollege since 1976, will read at 8 p.m. The program, sponsored by WCU's Visiting Writers Series, will be held in the recital hall of the Coulter Building. It is open to the public free of charge. Harvey's essays and poems have been published in Harper '.v. Iowa Review. Southern Humanities Review, The Remington Review, Georgia Journal. Hrloit Poetry Journal ad other literary magazines. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution said of Harvey's essays: "Steven Harvey can write about the building of a stone wall or a seventh-grader's first Minings in the loins and give them freshness and immediacy. We find our own tangled lives— our hopes, (cars, confusions and eccentricities— reflected in the words of another." Harvey's "The Nuclear Family" was named one of the "Notable Essays" in the collection Best American Essays 1992, and his The Geometry of Lilies was selected as a finalist by the Associated Writing Programs in the category of creative non-fiction in 1991 and 1992.
