September 21,1995 Western Carolinian 15 Sports Cross-Country Teams Impressive in Chattanooga by Brian Clark StaffReporter Chattanooga, TN— Western Carolina's cross-country teams continued to lower their times and places as both squads finished second in their respective races last weekend at the Adidas/PowerAde Invitational in Chattanooga,TN. UT-Chattanooga, the host school, edged out the Cats for the championship in both the men's and women's events. The races were held at the Moccasin Bend Cross-Country Course. There were high school and open races held in conjunction with the collegiate races. The collegiate women raced over a fairly flat course for the standard women's collegiate cross-country distance of 5000 meters (3.1 miles). The men had a break from their typical five mile runs, as this respective race was over a 4-mile distance. Finishing behind UTC and WCU in the men's race were Florida State, MEN'S POCKET BILLIARDS Monday, September 25th International & Independent 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 26th Fraternity & National 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 27th All Campus Finals 4:00 p.m. • WATERPOLO TEAM SIGN-UPS will be held Tuesday, September 26th through Thursday, October 5th at 3:00pm. Five members per team. • MEN'S FLAG FOOTBALL AND WOMEN'S FLAG FLOOPBALL TEAM SIGN-UPS will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 26th through Wednesday, October 4th in Office 13 of Reid Gym. • WOMEN'S BADMINTON "DOUBLES" will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, September 25th at Reid Main Floor. • RESULTS OF MEN'S TENNIS ALL CAMPUS FINALS: "SINGLES" All Campus Champion Avery Stephens SigEpA All Campus Runner-Up Thomas Witherspoon Teaching Fellows All Campus Champion All Campus Runner-Up "DOUBLES" Jeff Gilmore Ben Grant David Pollock Heath Swain Deuce -T Hooterville Express •. The Cats' Turner Norris continued to establish himself as one of the Southern Conference's elite runners as tie finished second in the men's race with a time of 20:57, only five seconds behind winner Mike Leinweker of UTC. The Catamounts' next five finishers were bunched with Brian Clark (27 seconds off the winning pace) finishing seventh, Jack Murphy in ninth, freshman Jeremiah Buechner in 12th, Keith Gunder in 13th, and Kevin Mclntire who came in 14th. Only 44 seconds separated Clark and Mclntire. Collin Webster, second team All- Conference member last year as a freshman, had a good race, placing 17th. Webster missed 6 weeks of training at summer's end, and has only resumed training for three weeks now. "Our men were disappointed they did not win as they had a legitimate chance to take first place and found no consolation in finishing second," said Danny Williamson, WCU's head cross-country coach. "Our second level of runners, our third through sixth finishers, made a lot of improvement since the first meet. However, if we are going to win those type meets and be more competitive against conference opponents, those guys are going to have to close the time gap even more," he added. UTC slipped by the Cats by a score of 35-48. The women's team finished 16 scoring places behind UTC, but all nine WCU runners finished in the top 25 scoring positions and that performance excited Williamson. "Everyone improved from one to two minutes from their times in the first meet and, if we continue to make that kind of progress, we will be competitive with the best in the Southern Conference," he stated. Junior Kristen Savery led Western's effort with a third place finish, only 20 seconds out of first. Freshman Erica Thieman continued to impress with a sixth place finish. The big story of the day was the return of red-shirt freshman Alicia Fuduric. Fuduric finished in 12th place in her first collegiate cross-country race. She missed all of last season with a stress fracture, and then suffered another one this summer. This caused her to miss the preseason training period and the first meet. Junior Maggie Donahue finished in 16th place followed by another pair of freshmen-Lauren Ballard in 17th and Anne Gardner in 20th. The next meet for the Cats' cross-country teams will be September 30 in the Greensboro Cross-Country Invitational. Intramural Softball Standings September 15,1995 Men's League 1. Drillers 2.
