  • September 7,1995 Western Carolinian Features They Played Some Skynyrd by Phoebe Esmon StaffReporter The signs in the cafeteria said to "Wear your favorite Buffet shirt," so I was more than a little scared of what I was going to see last Thursday. What I saw was five "parrot heads" playing everything from their own Buffetesque originals to covers of songs by "the Cheeseburger" himself, Jackson Browne, and Little Feat. Although the crowd of 30 or 40 seemed less than enthusiastic at the start of the show, by the time the band played Buffet's "Volcano," a conga line, made up of several members of the track team and music department, was snaking its way through the sparsely populated UC lawn. At the start of 'Doctor My Eyes,' by Jackson Browne, the line formed a circle and all the cats who were "hip to the beat" took turns breakdancing and just grooving for their friends and everybody else. The band, obviously elated at any form of positive response from the previously uncommunicative crowd, took someone's cry of "Play some Skynard, dude" to heart, and played "Three Steps." The breakdancers went nuts and started square dancing. The show closed with two originals, "Hooter Pie," a favorite with the crowd, and "Noise For the Boys." Both were vaguely reminiscent of things one might hear after hours at the Margaritaville Cafe. All in all, the crowd was given an eclectic show by five good musicians ... and they were treated to some mighty fine hoofin' too. Photo by Jenny Webb Check the time! Need something to do?
