HOOVER HEARD j WEDNESDAY NIGHT Progress toward a complete agreement between Sen. William K. Borah (R., Idaho) and the Landon forces on the Republican party platform, was reported Wednesday by William Allen White, one of the Kansas governor's chief aids. "I have talked to Senator Borah. The platform as it stands now will be placed before him by former Senator John Tmomas. If Mr. Borah has any suggestions, we will invite him before our committee. "If this is not satisfactory and he wants a hearing before the convention, the Landon forces will fight for it." Snell Given Gavel As for the convention proper, the gavel which will signal the presidential nomination, possibly late Thursday night, was placed in the hands of Rep. Bertrand Snell, of New York, as permanent chair- Snell, who has battled Roosevelt legislation as minority leader of the house of representatives, was on the program- for the chief speech of Wednesday's session. A few unexciting credentials disputes and a report from the rules committee were the only business ahead of the Gnell speech, a follow- up to the martial keynote sounded by Senator Frederick Stewier of Oregon. A third broadside against Roosevelt policies by former President Herbert Hoover, newly arrived from his California home came Wednesday night. Despite the tardiness of the great majority of delegates at the first meetings Tuesday, leaders hopefully summoned the convention to meet at 11 a. m., E. S. T. again Wednesday. Prayer by the Right Rev. Ernest Lynn Waldorn, bishop of Chicago, began the program and 'Snell's address closed it until 8 o'clock Wednesday morning. Knox's Stand Col. Frank Knox, of Illinois took a stand for a dollar redemable in gold at the present value, to the dissatisfaction of an outspoken element having a hand in the platform making. C, has been named a delegate to the Association of official seed analysts of North America which will be held in Rochester, N. Y., June 16- 1S, and at Geneva N. Y., June 19th. These meetings are held in conjunction with the Association for advancement of science. Irs. Torpy will present a paper "Growing Tests in an Attempt to Diffe entiate Melilotus Alba and melilotus officinalis on seed char- mi eristics''. This is the result of a years research work and the work will continue another year, at which time the Department of Agriculture will publish it. All papers presented must be approved by the secretary of Agriculture. Mrs. Torpy is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Mann ot North Main Street. She is a graduate of the Canton high school and of the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina. of the Grand Lodge meeting Knights of Pythias on Tuesday and Wednesday of week in Hickory, the meeting of the local lodge will be held on Monday evening, June 15. This meeting of Canton Lodge 149, will be the regular meeting of the week, of the Tuesday night as This was decided at the last meeting, June 9th, as there are quite a number of local Pythians planning to attend the Grand Lodge sesion in Hickory, and will therefore be away on the regular meeting night. The Rank of Esquire will be conferred on a class at this meeting Monday night. The meeting will be called to order at 7:45.
