  • 20 Western Carolinian September 14,1995 Sports Cross Country Impressive in Season Opener by Brian Clark StaffReporter CULLOWHEE— The Catamount Cross-Country teams kicked their season off last weekend in Cullowhee. Fourteen schools made their way up the mountains to compete in the fifth annual WCU Cross-Country Invitational. In the women's race, Virginia Tech won for the second straight year. They overcame a one-two Clemson finish to win with 46 points. In the men's race, Southern Conference foe East Tennessee State came out on top. The Catamount ladies ran well, and appear to be much improved over last year. The Cats' Kristen Savery went to the front of the pack from the race's start. She pushed the pace for around the first mile until relinquishing the lead. She stayed in the thick of things, and found herself leading the Catamount contingent with an 11th place finish among 104 runners, and a time of 19:37 for the tough 5000 meter course. Savery, a junior from Palm Harbor, FL, knocked off two minutes and thirty four places over her time and finish in last year's WCU Invitational. Freshman Erica Thieman proved that she was going to be a force to be reckoned with. Thieman was the Cats' #2 runner and 20th runner in the field, running a 20:04. Completing WCU's scoring places were freshman Lauren Ballard in 41st place, junior Lisa Karr in 50th, and freshman Aime Hood in 57th place. The Ladies' team tied for a fifth place finish with Florida International, both tallying 179 points. Virginia Tech, Clemson, Georgia, and Furman defeated the Cats, finishing first through fourth respectively. The Cats beat eight teams with Campbell, Georgia State, and ETSU among the bigger names. In the men's race Turner Norris ran a quick 26:08 to lead the Cat's scoring. Norris, a junior from Asheville, missed both indoor and outdoor track last year due to a stress fracture. Norris made his return debut by finishing a strong fifth, 32 seconds off the winning pace set by Julian Dwyer of Georgia State, and only 8 seconds off of the runner up position. Sophomore Brian Clark and senior Jack Murphy were the Cats' second and third scorers finishing 23 and 27. Freshmen Jeremiah Buechner (36) and Adam Wallen (39) rounded out the Cats scorers. The men who placed third in this meet last year, had to settle for the sixth place finish. ETSU, Malone College, Clemson, Georgia State, and Dayton (first through fifth respectively) placed ahead of the Cats. The men defeated eight teams, two of which are Southern Conference rivalries. b ___. ___l ' 'A / %L''~' _P d . <*tflr *■ j*l il__ X.W _k____§ % H> m\ *HBk fl __^_§" WT^mw 1 iIp- *** g #* -___•<*,¥ ■ ^*! w LW ___■ W* .,?<> ?■ % \ t .-, titeife'" i a is-* jdSy. l_W*^' '^m% i__rf»* i __p* ^ ckT ■ Junior, Turner Norris came in fifth, 32 seconds off the winning " This and Front Page Photo by Terry K. Roberts Coach Danny Williamson was impressed by his team's performances. "Overall, it was our best opening meet in several years. Our finishes were not as high as in some past seasons, but our times from top to bottom were much better than any meet I can remember," he stated. "Our women's team is remarkably improved and our men's team, despite the loss of two all-conference runners, was better than last season's team performance," he added. In preseason coaches' polls the catamount men are predicted to finish third behind ASU and ETSU, while the women are predicted to finish sixth. The Cats travel to Chattanooga, Tennessee this weekend to compete in the Adidas/Powerade Invitational which will be held at the Moccasin Bend course beginning at 9:00 a.m. Some of the other entries from this past weekend's races are UT-Chattanooga, Florida State, North Alabama, Carson- Newman, Alabama-Huntsville and Charleston Southern.
