Western Carolinian January 19, 1994 News WCU Names New Director of Alumni Affairs Erin Hogg Staff Reporter Carla C. Cody has recently been named Director of Alumni Affairs at WCU, after serving as the interim director of that office for the past eighteen months. The Executive Director for University Advancement, David B. McDonald, said that Cody was selected from a group of seventy appli cants from eleven states. As Alumni Director, Cody is responsible for WCU's 30,000 alumni. As a native of Sylva and a 1977 graduate of WCU, Cody joined the University Advancement staff in 1991 as the Alumni Affairs Secretary. After earning her Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from WCU, Cody continued her education and is currently working towards a Master's degree in Human Resource Development. AXA Sponsors Blood Drive Red Cross officials are currently rationing hospital blood needs for Types O and B on a case- by-case basis. Low collections since January 1, and the severe weather last week have depleted current Type O and B inventories in the Carolinas Region. Blood shortages are severe in ten major cities around the country following the holidays. Patients' blood therapy needs require 1,500 blood donors a day in the Carolinas Region. The Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity will be hosting a blood mobile Tuesday- Thursday, January 24-26. The Carolinas Region operates 25 blood- mobiles and eight fixed collection sites a day throughout its 80-county area. Donors must be 17 or older, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in j good health. A blood donation can be made every 56 days. For more information about other blood donation opportunities, call 1-800- GIVE LIFE, or call your local Red Cross Chapter. Courtesy of the Red Cross NOTE: Due to the amount of phone calls claiming not to have received December lOth's issue of the WC, the executive staff decided it would only be logical to reprint the two biggest stories of the issue. We apologize to those avid readers who did not receive the WC. If anyone would like a back issue- plenty still remain at the office. Complaints Continue to Cloud the Airwaves of WCU Colleen Vasconcellos Associate Editor Problems at WCU's notorious radio station, WWCU, are far from over, as anonymous sources continue to come forward with further problems and complaints. From the charges of the alleged sexual harassment case spring more complaints, as the executive staff member who was allegedly harassed received a threatening phone call on Friday from another member of the executive staff. Although the call only spoke of a meeting with a few members of the staff, the caller did tell her to "bring someone with her if she liked." On top of that, our alleged sexual harasser is continuing his shift at the radio station. The agreement that both the harasser and harassed signed stated that he would only be allowed at the station at his regular shift and at the Tuesday night general staff meeting. However, an inside source reports that nothing at the station has changed, except that he no longer receives his paycheck. He continues to hang around the station, and has taken on other shifts as well. If you read last week's article on the radio station, you would recall reading about the fact that a few employees do not meet the requirements, including members of the executive staff. An anonymous source has come forward adding to these accusations. According to this source, one of the executive staff member's girlfriends was hired onto the executive staff. The requirements for this position state that, besides having the correct GPA, one must have worked at the station for one semester. At the regularly scheduled Tues day night meeting, some of the overly alarmed members questioned this appointment, but they were told that she had worked at the radio station two years ago. However, a few of those members are still in doubt. This same girlfriend's significant other had been allegedly living at the radio station for about a month, reports another inside source. Although he doesn't live there now, living at the radio station is very much against the rules. On the subject of members not meeting the requirements, our anonymous sources also reported that a general staff member has a • GPA below a 2.0 (supposedly a 1.8). He is not supposed to be receiving $ 1 his monthly paycheck, but many have reason to believe that he is. When asked what disciplinary actions were being taken, administration replied, "They're on top oi it." If this is the top...the bottom must be bottomless. WCU Denies SCAAR Admission to Open House Scott Swift Staff Reporter On November 19, WCU held its annual Open House to introduce the university's services to prospective students and their parents. Most student-run organizations were invited to attend; however, according to SCAAR President, Chad Hall, their organization was denied attendance to the event. SCAAR, the Student Coalition Against Acquaintance Rape, distributes information regarding rape and other forms of sexual violence. Hall alleges that Admissions Officer, Drumont Bowman, who decides which organizations are eligible to attend Open House, denied SCAAR's attendance because he did not want prospective students to think there is a problem with rape on campus. According to Hall, Bowman also said that he would flatly deny any gay or lesbian organization admission to Open House, and that he was trying to prevent WCU's alcohol awareness group BACCHUS from attending future Open Houses. In response to these allegat ions, Bowman first said that he did no feel Mr. Hall's and his conversan belonged in the Western Caroling He then responded that he dcnie SCAAR's admission because tti y applied too late to get a table. ^ • Bowman also stated that n^ | never received any requests tro gay or lesbian organization ■ replied, "No comment," to Ha other allegations. -{eX, J SCAAR Co-President Jem ( Raper, says that Bowman's dec ,. "didn't make anv sense. ^ ,1 funded by the SGA like every ° . organization," she said. . #•']
