Servo Tells if Like if is; I bash wcK bof I Jusfify if by Servo Staff Writer Welcome back ladies and gentlemen to another fun filled semester here at good oP WCU. Pm sure that a lot of you (especially all of the freshmen) are sick of that phrase. 1 know I am. For those of you who don't know, the Western Carolinian has a weekly wrestling report and has had one for the past few years. Why? I really don't know. I just asked for the job and they said yes. It has been my jobfor the past three years to bring wrestling fans across this fine campus up to speed on the happenings of WWF, WCW, a bit of ECW, and Western's very own wrestling federation, the PWF. First of all, readers of my column for the past few years have noticed that I have a habit of bashing WCW and singing the praises of WWF. Why does Servo do this? The answer may be simple to many of you. World Championship Wrestling sucks. But that is not the reason (it's just part of the problem WCW has). I thought that I would open up this semester with some reasons that WCW has been lacking in the past few years. Here's a bit of history: WCW was bought by Ted Turner and run by Eric Biscpoff. By utilizing Turner's endless bank account, Bischoff hired some big namfes in wrestling. Actually, Bischoff hired most big name wrestlers directly from JOIN A WINNING TEAM! Full lime and port time | work available. Flexible hours to meet i doss schedules. -1 : Apply in person at the Sylva Taco Bell, or call ! 586-8108. Itsnotjustajob/it'sa discountonlacosl WWF. Professional wrestling was not as popular, until WCW came along with the nWo. This New World Order was hell-bent on taking over wrestling and the crowd really got into it. This complete lack of respect that was played out by WCW employees was just the ticket to get fans back into the action. WWF soon followed the trend with Degeneration X and Stone Cold Steve Austin. However, while WWF evolved characters in and out of these disrespectful roles with intriguing storylines. WCW simply rehashed the nWo over and over again with seemingly no reason. Which brings me to the first major problem with WCW Evidently, Eric Bishoff was a one trick pony. He knew the nWo and nothing else. Finally fans simply got bored and stopped caring. Ever since (hen, WWF has held the first place position in the ratings war ever since. When WCW came under new management with former story-line writer, Vince Russo.WCW hoped to make a comeback. The matches were booked better than that of Bischoff, but two new problems arose out of Russo's reign. The first major problem of WCW'S new system is that the wrong wrestlers are being pushed into the spotlight. Instead of pushing pure wrestling talent such as Chris Daniels and Mike Modest who have years of wrestling experience in areas such as microphone skills, charisma, and overall wrestling talent, WCW pushed rookies straight out of WCW's training program, the Power Plant. These new guys do have the wrestling talent, but lack anything that can get a response out of the crowd. The other problem that Russo failed to rectify is the use of story-lines. Wrestlers tend to turn face (or good guy) to heel (bad guy) with no reason. For example, Brett Hart came to WCW a face, suddenly turned heel at.War Games in 1998. The next day on Nitro, Hart told the fans that he appreciated all that they have done for him, turning him face again. However, later that night, Hart was back as a heel. No reasoning, just the assumption that the fans will just change. Unfortunately, the fans only got confused. In closing, the WWF gives the fans what they want by way of captivating storylines, great wrestling and charismatic wrestlers. WCW simply confuses its fans. So I believe I am justified in my bashing of WCW from a management point of view. The wrestling aspect is fine, but the head guys just, well, suck. Speaking of suck, there is a wrestling federation on this very campus that doesn't suck. The Pan- Universal Wrestling Federation is back and in lull swing. The first show last week drew a small crowd of amateur pro wrestling fans, while the PWF wrestlers (me included) battled a few "scrimmage" type matches. Wednesday night will boast new storylines as well as some new faces to the PWF. If you are Interested in joining us in our program, please feel free to join us at the volleyball court at Reynolds hall around 9:00 pm. If anything, you WCW fans can just come to watch me get my skinny ass kicked. ^^^ ^^^ ■■■':■■'■ '■■ ■ .■ . ^^^ ..;:.:;■. *~^~^ . .:.,:;^^~ 'Wgw^HSHiw™ IIIJI&ftHww**9^ ^^«&ffit»°w*WBK>«, >>■:■'■■- .
