Body of Karen Styles Found on Friday: The search is over, but the investigation continues ... Amy Seeley Staff Reporter You may have seen the fliers around campus. "Missing: Karen Styles," they said, followed by a description of the former WCU student who has been missing since Halloween. Most of these fliers are down this week, as the body of Karen Styles was found Friday, tied to a tree in a densely wooded area of Bent Creek in Buncombe County, less than two miles from where her parked car was found after she hacLdisappeared almost a month ago. Styles' partially decomposed body was found less than two miles from where her Plymouth Reliant was parked at the head of the trail. Investigators believe that the body had been bound to the tree since Halloween, but the dense, steep terrain prevented the searchers from locating the body. Buncombe County Sherriff Charles Long later confirmed that Styles had been bound to the tree with duct tape, killed, and then left in the wooded area. The cause of death will not be released until evidence, which has been sent to an FBI lab in Washington, D.C, is analyzed. However, WLOS and reported on Tuesday, and the Asheville- Citizen Times reported Wednesday, that she was killed by a gunshot to the head. Although several rumors have surfaced that satanic activity may have been involved in the death. Long denies any such evidence. More than 100 people were involved in the search for Styles. The only clue to her disappearance was the spare key to her car which she always carried with her when she ran. On November 13, a Wildlife Resources Commission officer found a bloody T- shirt on a logging road near the Lake Powhatan search area, but deputies now believe that it is unlikely that the shirt belonged to Styles. The yellow ribbons that were once worn in hopes that Styles would be found safely have been taken down and put away. Instead, the safety of the Bent Creek recreational area is being ques tioned as Long warns those who choose to venture alone in the popular area to keep a watchful eye. No official warning about the area has been issued, and Long said that "we want people to use caution when they go into that area." Styles graduated from WCU on August 5,1994, with a BS in Therapeutic Recreation, following a summer internship at Yellowstone Treatment Center in Billings, Montana, where she worked with troubled children. "I think that the word (to describe Styles) would be 'enthusiastic'," said Matt Bartholomew, an acquaintance of Styles, "...about helping people, the field she was in ... everything. She was great in the field she chose—healing, treatment—she would have been that because of her upbeat personality and how she would go out of her way for anybody." Styles was the daughter of Katheryn and Thad Styles, and a lifelong resident of Buncombe County. Her funeral was held Tuesday, at Edgewood Baptist Church in Candler, with the burial in Bryson City. In lieu of flowers, Styles' family asked that memorials be made to the Eliada Home for Children, PO Box 16708, Asheville, 28816; DARE program, c/o Buncombe County Sheriff's department, 393 Hendersonville Road, Asheville, 28803; Baptist Children's Home, 240 Pearson Drive, Asheville, 28801; or one's favorite charity. Complaints at WWCU Continue: Problems grow as two executive staff members resign Erin Painter Staff Reporter Complaints of alleged sexual harassment continue to cloud the airwaves of WWCU. On November 1, a decision was made by the station's General Manager, Mike Whalen, to suspend a male member of WWCU's executive staff pending a sexual harassment investigation. It was then determined that the male would be removed from the executive staff. However, this two-year associate of the station would be allowed to continue with his regular Monday-Friday show. He would only be allowed at the station during his regular shift, and at general staff meetings on Tuesday nights. However, recent developments seem to show that this issue is not settled. An inside source from the station contends that these recent rules, as well as many others, are not being enforced. Also, two female members of the station's executive staff committee have resigned. "I was not sexually harrassed," said one of the female members who resigned. "I was a witness to part of that. I was there at the tail end. I feel bad that it happened." She went on to say, "A lot of other things are going on, and it is a lot deeper than the students." The other female member who resigned said, "The only thing that you can experience there is poor management. It's very hard to learn, when the executive staff doesn't follow the by - laws." An anonymous source added to her statement, "Some of the employees don't even meet the requirements, and one holds an executive position. Just one." WWCU's problems seem to be far from over.
