  • Western Carolinian May 2, 1985 Sports Others Await Free Agent Bids Cooper Drafted By Seattle By JEFF CHAPMAN Sports Writer Western Carolina defensive standout Louis Cooper was chosen by the Seattle Seahawks in the National Football League's 1985 college draft held Tuesday and Wenesday of this week. Seattle Head Coach Chuck Knox, a veteran of many years in the NFL, named Cooper, a 6-2, 235- pound All-Southern Conference performer, as his choice in the eleventh round of the draft. Coach Bob Waters of the Catamounts indicated that Seattle would probably use Cooper at outside linebacker "because of his strength and excellent movement for a player of his size." Waters also stated that "Louis is very fortunate to have been chosen by Seattle. It is an excellent organization. The coaching staff and front office is one of the finest in the National Football League, ranking with the likes of Dallas." Several other Catamount standouts, who were not chosen in the draft, have indicated that they are considering trying out for the NFL as free agents. They include quarterback Jeff Gilbert, defensive end Bernard Jones, wide receiver Eric Rasheed, and defensive back Tiger Greene. NFL teams shored up defenses and offensive lines in the draft's first round and ignored a mediocre crop of quarterbacks through the first twenty-one selections. Commisioner Pete Rozelle officially introduced Virginia Tech defensive end Bruce Smith as the number one choice. Smith had already signed a four- year, $2.6 million contract with the Buffalo Bills. The Minnesota Vikings traded their second pick to Atlanta for the Falcons' first and third round picks. Atlanta used the pick, naming offensive tackle Bill Fralic of Pittsburgh as the draft's second choice. Two Atlantic Coast Conference players were chosen in the first round. The first of those was University of North Carolina tailback Ethan Horton, chosen by the Kansas City Chiefs. Horton, a Kannapolis native, was the first running back picked and was the sixteenth draft choice overall. Coach John Mackovic of the Chiefs had previously indicated that he had followed the career of Horton and that the All-ACC performer has proven that he is a durable back. William Perry of Clemson was chosen by the Chicago Bears. The 6-2, 350 lb. nose tackle was the 22nd player picked overall. The Cincinatti Bengals used their frist choice to grab wide receiver Eddie Brown, the favorite target of Bernie Kosar at the University of Miami. WCU Track Second at Conference Meet Western Carolina made its best run ever at a Southern Conference Track & Field Championship last weekend, but came up short in its effort to unseat perennial champion Appalachian State. The Catamounts led the eight team meet, 99-95 over ASU, with six events remaining. The Mountaineers then outscored WCU 52 to 26 in those six events to win their second straight title by a 151-125 count over the Catamounts. Virginia Military finished third with 100 points followed by The Citadel (78), East Tennessee State (70), Marshall (47), Furman (28) and Davidson (18). The Catamounts finished first in five events and claimed second place in five others. In addition, WCU's Don Millwood was named the conference's coach of the year. It was Millwood's second straight coaching award as he was also named the league's indoor track and field coach of the year in February. WCU finished first in three individual events and two relays. Steve Foster won the long jump with a leap of 24'11". Phil Roberts ran away with the 3,000 meter steeplechase in a time of 9:18.3. Earl Bates successfully defended his title in the 400 meters with a timing of 47:18. Western's 400 meters relay team of Eric Rasheed, James Ford, Ricky Schell and Bates outran Appalachian State to win that event in a time of 41:02. The Catamounts 1600 meter relay team of Eric DeSha, Richard Rowe, Nelson Dixon and Bates also beat Appalachian State with a clocking of 3:11.95 for first place. Ford was WCU's top point getter with second place finishes in the 100 meters and 200 meters and ran on the winning 400 meters relay team. Prior to this season's second place finish, WCU's highest placing in a Southern Conference Track and Field championship meet was last year's fourth place. The 125 points is also WCU's highest point total ever in a conference meet. Lewis Cooper defensive linebacker for WCU, was drafted Tuesday by the National Football League franchise, the Seattle Seahawks. He was picked up by Seattle in the eleventh round, the only Catamount to be picked up in the draft so far. Golfers Finish Fourth Western Carolina University's golf team joined the school's golf and track and field teams in registering its highest finish ever in a Southern Conference championship-meet this year. Western's golfers finished fourth in the Southern Conference Golf Championship Tournament held last week at Raintree Country Club's North Course in Matthews, NC behind the all-conference performances of Brett Miller and Scott Garrett. Furman won the tournament with a 54-hole score of 904 which was eight strokes better than Marshall's 913 total. The Citadel (920) finished six strokes ahead of WCU's four-man team. VMI was fifth (964) followed by Appalachian State (966), Tennessee-Chattanooga (984) and Davidson (995). Miller, a sophomore from Hendersonville, repeated on the all-conference team as he finished fourth in the individual standings with a 54-hole score of 226. Garrett, a Brevard junior, was eighth in the individual medal play with a 231 total. The top ten finishers in the individual medal play are named to the all-conference team. The other members of WCU's team were Greg Young, who barely missed the all- conference team with a 233 total, and Kevin O'Callaghan who totaled 237.
