  • 6 Western Carolinian Editorial The Smoking Sect November 3, 1994 ion Social Commentary by Williams and other maniacs. This weeks guest, Mr. James Gray. "Revolution is not the uprising against pre-existing order, but the setting-up of a new order contradictory to the traditional one." -Jose Ortega y Gasset Today we are bombarded with the War on Crime, the War on Poverty, the War on Drugs, the War on Hunger... Why not circumvent them all with a War on Ignorance? I hear so many people around here gripe, but their inaction causes their grievance to fall flat. It's a spent cliche, but with good reason so here goes— everybody has a gripe but a solution is worth a million dollars. Information and intelligence are the most potent and indestructible weapons in the world. Lots of "free spirits" here in Cullowhee don't like the social climate and the sheltering, suppressive nature of this school; and to a great extent I agree. I recently did a news article for my Reporting of Public Affairs (CMPM 302) class on the Student Bill of Rights. And let me tell you that it was quite difficult to get it done because nobody around here knows about the SBR. I found out firsthand thai the SGA is indeed not competent because they do not know about the doctrines that govern them. The friggin' officer that I talked to did not know what parts of the U.S. Constitution the Student Bill of Rights are an extension of. Nor did he know if the SBR was for the entire UNC system or this University exclusively. The copy of the SBR that I got from the SGA office was littered with mechanical (i.e. spelling, grammar, etc.) errors. This concretely affirmed that this Bill of Rights applies to this school only. I took this ignorance that I found at the SGA to the streets to find out if it reflected the student body's knowledge of SBR. Of the 30 people randomly surveyed only 11 knew of the SBR's existence. Those who knew about it usually said something like "Yeah, but they don't mean anything." Damn right, the SBR is a waste of paper if its provisions are not empowered by the people to whom it applies —YOU!!!!!!!! Let's turn this from this campus to a wider scope — the nation. Here's an example when it comes to the War on Poverty. People are usually poor because they cannot find jobs. Jobs are hard to find when you have few marketable skills. You attain these skills from being educated, the opposite of ignorant. People on the poor side of town are ignorant because the schools on the "right side of the tracks" get more money and priority from Education Boards. In the Statistical Abstract of the United States, 1994 the total figures for defense spending for four selected years were as follows (in billions of dollars): 1970 - 90.4, 1980 -155.2,1985 - 279,1990 - 328.4. The total Educational spending for those same years, on local, state, and federal levels were (again, in billions of dollars): 1970 - 249.5,1980 - 285.7,1985 - 313.6,1990 - 403. No more recent statistics are available becuase Educational funding in America has always been thrown on the shoulders of sub federal levels of government. In 1970 state and local governments beared 90.6% of the burden of scholastic funding. In 1990 that tradition continued as the federal governement left all but 8.3% of the academic check to the various levels within state governments. Perhaps the Federal government should take a more active role in education and standardize the level of enlightenment for all Americans. A dollar in Venice Beach, CA is by no means worth the same .is a dollar in Franklin, NC. In a lot of nations, take France for example, every high school student in the nation must pass a standardised minimum skills level test Many states have enacted these measures. If the level of education was the same in all regions and cities and colors and classes in America then the distribution of resources would not be so sporadic. A simple hypothetical and arithmetic comparison concerning the War on Drugs: We have two acres. One is planted in pines, the other covered in hemp. The acre of hemp will produce four and some odd times as much paper as the acre of trees. Hemp is an annual crop. That means that it is renewable yearly. It takes at least 20 years for a stand of pines to grow to a harvestable size. So in that * 20 year span the hemp acre can produce 80 to 100 times more paper than the acre of pines. fuels. Education "s people differential access to vital Commodities and resources. Wheneducahfl spending is such a low priority to the government then you end up with a post- Industrial economy in which the bulk of job) shifts from manufacturing to service industries. In Western European countries, the populace has enough foresight to keep the base of their country's money and asset* out of the hands of an elite, avaricious few. Competition for post-High School educat is competitive in these counties (such as Denmark, Great Brittian, and the Netherlands) because those people realize "scientia potestas est," (knowledge is power, Sir Francis Bacon). Wake up. Use know-how and awareness to take back what rightfully belongs to you. The French Revolution started when almost everything fell into the hands of a small handful. Guess what? It's happening again, right here in America — the land of the apathetic and the home of the unin formed. ——-—■ , -■■ nempoi ish,,™ , s'aucorna c 7 u,c""""" HZ li I 1 , formed. Students of the past and present are given an opportunity to salute many aspects of college life; social events, community service and most importantly, education. Homecoming is fun; dances, dedications, dinners, outstanding alumni awards, football, music .... Who could ask for more? Oh, and the Homecoming Queen. Yes indeed folks, some traditions are meant to be improved upon. The method of choosing a Homecoming Queen is such a tradition. Presently, Homecoming nominations are made by various clubs, organizations Student Upset With "Vultures" in Search for K.S. \ . ;'■ ii (primarily, fraternities and sororities) and 30 or more people willing to sponsor a nonaffiliated person. The decision is made by posting pictures of the nominees in front of the UC. I believe, because, after all, WCU is a "university," and "universities" are for "students," [one who applies the mind to acquire knowledge]. "Students" at a "university" should be applauded for their academic and social efforts. I propose this: faculty members should nominate students to represent their particular departments. Organizations should continue to choose a representative as well. Therefore, the Homecoming Court Dear Editor, ^^-gH^^M I greatly appreciate the effort by University Housing to give anybody who knows K.S. a chance to join the search for her by providing transportation from campus to the site she was reported missing, and back.
