The decision to suspend the individual was made by Mike Whalen, General Manager of the campus station, as a precautionary measure. "Right now, everything is allegations, and it is still hearsay," said Whalen, "I can't take action, because I don't know the whole truth." Details concerning the incident are still sketchy, but apparently the incident was of a "touchy-feely" nature. "I'm not exactly sure when the incident occured," said Whalen, "but from what I undestand, it happened last week." As a result of the allegations, according to Whalen, a meeting has been scheduled for next week, in which the information will be turned over to the Appeals Committee of the station. The Committee, comprised of the Advisory Board, one individual appointed by the Program Director, and one individual appointed by the Station Advisor, will determine the authenticity and severity of the charges and what action should be taken. Even the Grim Reaper came to see Hummer open for the Sex Police at Bailey's on Halloween night. Photo by Blake Frizzell to press charges," Whalen said, "and I'll hand everything over to the station's trying to play God, but it's a question of ethics." "Nobody has said that they want advisor if it comes to that. I'm not Federal Judge Receives WCU's Top Alumus Award Erin Painter Staff Reporter The October 22 Homecoming festivities were especially exciting for WCU graduate James A. Beaty* Jr., as he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award. Beaty, a former Political Science major, who graduated from WCU with honors in 1971, was nominated by President Clinton to become a Federal District Court Judge. He was recently confirmed to the position by Congress, and presides over federal courts in North Carolina's Middle District. After obtaining his law degree from UNC-Chapel Hill, Beaty began his career in a private practice in 1974. He was elected as a resident state Superior Court Judge in 1988, and was named by NC Governor James Hunt as special Superior Court Judge in 1991. Beaty is also a member of the NC and Forsyth County Bar Associations, the NC Academy of Trial Lawyers, where he was named the Outstanding Court Judge of 1990, and the NC Association of Black Lawyers. While at WCU, Beaty served as a halfback on the Catamount football team, President of the Political Science Association, a founder of Black Students United for Liberation, and a member of the Men's Leadership Honorary Society. In addition to his occupation, Beaty has devoted time to the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Board, the Salvation Army Girls Club Advisory Council, and the Youth Opportunity Home Council. Life of Cullowhee Native Remains Mystery Colleen Vasconcellos Associate Editor Samantha Bumgarner, a tall, rawboned woman from Jackson County, had great musical talent which took her to stages in New York City, Washington D.C, and Chicago. Although some of the major events in her life have been documented, much about this music pioneer remains a mystery. However, WCU's Mountain Heritage Center is seeking to solve that mystery. Bumgarner was born Samantha Biddix in Jackson County in 1878. Her father, Has Biddix, was a well-known fiddler in the area.
