  • November 3, 1994 Western Carolinian Sports Whitley Shoots a 69 in Home Tournament Chris Burton StaffReporter This past Monday and Tuesday five golf teams, including Western, took part in a two day 36 hole tournament. The Catamounts finished the tournament in second place, losing only to Tennessee Tech. Wins came over Davidson, UNC-Asheville and VMI. Scott Masters, of Tennessee Tech, won the overall tourney with rounds of 71 and 72. Western's own Jamie Whitley finshed second with rounds of 69 and 82. Whitley's first round of 69 turned out to be the lowest score of the tournament. Jamie Eckerd and Mike Sutton tied respectively for sixth, place both shooting a total round of 157. "The weather made things tough on the course today ," said Coach Johnny Wike. "Our team is making great progress. The three fall tournaments have helped us to build for the spring. Our young team consisting of a junior, a freshman, and five sophomores are expected to show even more improvement. We have already broken several school records this year." The Catamount golf team is finished for the fall, but they will hit the green again on Feburary 24 in Charleston, South Carolina. 11a tm Grilled Marinated Chicken Strips On A Bed Of Fresh Lettuce, Garnished With Tomaotes, Green Peppers and Onions $2.79* )lus tax Extra items and extra cheese available addit.opal cost. After losing five of their previous matches, the Lady Cats hoped to turn things around and get some wins in front of the home folks at Western. The first match was against Southern Conference rival Marshall on Friday night at Reid Gym. The Catamounts hoped to avenge a tough loss of three games to two at Marshall last month. It looked like more of the same this time around as the Lady Herd dominated the first two games winning 15-5 and 15-3. However, the Lady Cats came out with their game faces on for the remaining three games. WCU never lost their intensity and played hard for every point. The Lady Cats won their third and forth games 15-12 and 16-14 which forced the fifth rally point game. Western didn't disappoint the home fans winning 15-12 to beat the Herd three games to two. Tara Chadwick had a career high 22 kills to lead the Lady Cats. Kristin Baxter had three service aces to add to her WCU career aces record. Kelly Boerstler had 17 kills to lead Marshall. Coming off of their big win against Marshall, the Lady Cats hoped to make it two in a row against the Georgia State Lady Panthers. They had a little extra incentive to win since it was Parent's Day for WCU volleyball, as the special support of Catamount parents was recognized. The intensity level was high as both teams fought back and forth. Strong blocking and continued hard hitting from Tara Chadwick, Catherine Sawyers, and Emily Tillotson proved to be the difference for the Lady Cats as they won 15-12,15-10, and 15-10 to take the match in three games. Tillotson led WCU with 19 kills while Sawyer and Chadwick had 17 a piece. Kiki Okeke had 14 kills to lead Georgia State. Sunday was Senior Day for Catamount volleyball and the lone graduating senior, Emily Tillotson, was recognized for her outstanding play over the past four years. The Lady Cats were again all business when they took the court against Southern Conference foe Davidson College. They dominated the first game winning 15-8. The Cats appeared a little flat for the second game and Davidson took advantage, going on to win 15-10. Western picked it up in the third and forth games and crushed the Wildcats 15-3 and 15-5. Tillotson led the Lady Cats with 14 kills while Catherine Sawyers added 13. With the two conference victories over Marshall and Davidson, the Lady Cats are now 4-7 in conference play. If they win their remaining three regular season games, they could finish at 7-7 which would be a vast improvement on their winless conference record last season.
