Coulter Faculty Center for Teaching Excellence at WCU was dedicated at a ceremony open to the public in Hunter Library on September 1. The center, established during the tenure of Chancellor Myron L. Coulter, was named for him by the WCU board of trustees last April. Coulter retired as chancellor on June 30,1994. Taking part in the dedication ceremony will be Chancellor John H. Wakeley; Ben F. Ward, Center director; Stephen W. Woody, Chairman of the Board of Trustees; and Myron L. Coulter himself. The dedication ceremony was. open to the public. This year, elections will take place September 14 on the U.C. lawn from 8 AM to 6 PM. Vacancies in the student government include twelve commuter positions, and three Senator-at-Large positions extending to a two-year tenure. Other available positions are 16 Resident Hall seats. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Candidates must have 2.0 GPA in order to qualify. All interested students should apply in the SGA office, located on the second floor of the U.C. Voting is open to all students with an University Identification Card. Anyone without one will not be allowed to vote. During the election, commuter students will vote for fellow commuters, while residents are expected to vote for fellow residents. Dorondo, who received his doctoral degree in modern European and German History from the University of Oxford, joined WCU's faculty as a visiting lecturer in 1987. According to Dorondo, one of the most exciting aspects of the Honors Program is "an intense level of interaction between students and faculty." That give and take is stimulating for both the students and the honors teachers, he said. The lecture was named after a 14th century Italian mystic, Catherine of Siena, who was a "powerful voice for moral and ethical reform.' Dorondo said that he hopes the first lecture will evolve into a lecture series ethics that will be held each fall. Enrollment in the. Honors Program allows academically gifted students to take spe- j cially-designated courses taught by honors faculty members during the students' first two years. Honors students then participate in individual instruction and independent study in the* majors during their« two years at Western. About 200 WCII students, including« freshmen, are enrolled in the Honors Program for the fall semester.
