The play, directed by Stephen Michael Ayers, will be staged in an intimate in-the- round setting in Western's Hoey Auditorium April 6-9 and 13-16. Curtain time is 7:30 pm for all days. The show will feature original music composed for WCU's production by Daniel Lewis of Asheville. "Ghosts" is playwright Ibsen's critical shot at the rigid sociological institutions of the 19th century and the people who represent them, said Ayers. "It's also about how the ignorance and prejudices of one generation are passed along to another," he said. The play revolves around the actions of the late Capt. Alving, a character who never appears on stage. The rakish captain had fathered a child (Regina) after a dalliance with his wife's maid. To maintain the family's position in "proper society," Mrs. Alving paid the servant $300 to say the child was fathered by Jacob Engstrand, a common laborer. Mrs. Alving has also sent her son, Oswald, to live in Paris, away from the "polluted environment" at home. The play begins as Mrs. Alving (played by Donna Sullivan) prepares for a celebration as work is completed, with the help of Engstrand (Jason Hatfield), on an orphanage in honor of her husband. The orphanage will be consecrated by Pastor Manders (Steve Koten), a man who once courted Mrs. Alving until she chose high society, marrying the captain. Also gathered for the event, which takes a rum for the worse, are the captain's illegitimate child Regina (Phoebe Esmon) and his real son, Oswald (Dean Jones), who has returned from Paris for the festivities. Ticket prices are $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens, $5 for students.
